After delays, South Park ‘splash pad’ back on track

Users of South Park in Billings have been waiting a long time for their new “splash pad,” also known as a sprayground, where kids can cool off among a variety of fountains, jets and other water features. First, construction was delayed for an entire year after the two companies that initially bid on the project had their bids rejected because of problems both had in posting a performance bond. New owners have big plans for St. Vincent de Paul building

The new owners of the Montana Avenue building that houses the Charitable Works Office of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul plan to start renovating the three-story structure as soon as St. Vincent moves out. Vicki Massie, volunteer coordinator for St. Vincent de Paul, which has been without a director since Ed Zabrocki resigned in January, said the charity office should be in its new building south of the railroad tracks by the end of July. St. Vincent gearing up for move into new building

The move of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul charity office and thrift store to a new building south of the railroad tracks began about three years. Ernie Dutton, who had done some volunteer work for St. Vincent de Paul, was coming out of a Rotary meeting at what is now the DoubleTree by Hilton and decided to walk across Montana Avenue to the charity office. Minnesota Avenue’s Oasis Bar sign sold to local collector

The old Oasis Bar sign, a landmark on Minnesota Avenue for more than 60 years, is being sold to a private collector. Building owner Angie Cormier confirmed that the sign, with its camel and cactus outlined in neon, has been sold to Billings native Steve Henry, who will display it at Henry’s Garage, his corporate conference center on Garden Avenue. Bluegrass show heralds Cisel Hall’s return to center stage

Inderland, vice president and concert coordinator for the Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, is excited partly because the group that’s playing July 7 is the Gibson Brothers band, winner of numerous awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and veteran of the Grand Ole Opry. Update: Last-minute filings make for crowded city election

Update: Seven more candidates filed Monday afternoon to run for the Billings City Council, making this the most crowded city election in nearly 20 years, maybe longer. With the filing officially closed as of 5 p.m., there are now 26 candidates vying for the mayor’s position and five open seats on the City Council. According to records on the Yellowstone County Elections Office website, that eclipses the number of candidates in any city race going back to 1999, the earliest year for which results are posted. With clock ticking, Korean War vet to finally get his Jeep

Jerry Scherer, a veteran of Korea and Vietnam who retired from the Marine Corps as a master sergeant in 1968, turns 87 next week. He was a mechanic all his life, and a couple of years after his wife died nearly 20 years ago, he bought a 1945 Willys Army Jeep from a friend, thinking he could keep busy restoring it.
