Trent Inderland is looking forward even more keenly than usual to a bluegrass concert in Billings next week. Inderland, vice president and concert coordinator for the Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, is excited partly because the group that’s playing July 7 is the Gibson Brothers band, winner of numerous awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and veteran of the Grand Ole Opry. Richard Spencer is stirring up trouble in both my native and adopted states. Spencer, who created the term alt-right, is a resident of Whitefish. On Tuesday, he gave a speech in the Texas town where I used to live, at the university where I both taught and studied. Spencer has been spouting the virtues of the white race for years, but last month he gained a dubious national reputation for shouting “Hail Trump” at a conference in Washington, drawing Nazi-like salutes from his white supremacist fans. An exhibition created by Crow artist Wendy Red Star, which opens next week in Billings, promises to be a powerful combination of art, artifacts, family and the reverberations of tribal history. Rocky Mountain College faculty and staff got an unusually upbeat message Wednesday from President Bob Wilmouth. The annual all-campus meeting has focused in recent years on financial and enrollment challenges facing the liberal arts college. But Wilmouth told a packed auditorium today that he had good news. We went to Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Co.’s “New Works Festival” Friday night and recommend it wholeheartedly. It consists of 10 one-act plays of about 10 minutes each, all on the theme of “Welcome to Montana.” We have already described the plays in an earlier story, and will add here only that the plays, short as they are, cover a lot of ground and a lot emotional territory. Montana State University Billings’ popular lecture series on World War I, which packed the largest classroom on campus on five Tuesday evenings last fall, will resume Tuesday evening. Norm Clarke agrees: he’s come a long way from his small-town start. His lengthy journalism career began when he was in high school in his Eastern Montana hometown of Terry.
