Downtown arts and culture create ‘experiential economy’

Karl

As I drop down Interstate 90 into the river valley that holds the “Magic City,” I swear: I won’t ever live in Billings, Montana. The sun glints off a spawling refinery that dominates the city’s eastern entrance. A sickly sweet smell smacks my face, making my teeth ache and my stomach curl. And they’re processing sugar beets on the South Side. (more…) Continue Reading →

Outside magazine’s Billings video now available

Beer

The Outside magazine piece on Billings’ selection as the best town of 2016 is now posted online. Better yet, so is the five-minute video tribute to Billings that was created by the folks at Outside. To find the video, just click on the link above and scroll down to about the middle of the article. Two Billings attractions are featured prominently in the video: all the nearby mountain-biking opportunities and the many craft breweries in town. (This seems like a good time to remind our readers to be careful when combining these attractions.)

The downtown-centric video covers the ground quite thoroughly, to the point where you could almost imagine someone in a distant part of the country watching it and then Googling “job opportunities in Billings, Montana.” Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Mr. Bitters, Olive to give pens, livers a break

Drinks

After weeks of strong cocktails, mediocre wine and lots of draft beer, we’ve decided to give our livers a break. So without further ado, here are a few of our favorites in the Magic City: (more…) Continue Reading →

The Bar Tab: Daytime outing sheds new light on Chads

chad

Have you ever had a hankering for some live music, dancing, draft beer and big crowds? If so, you’ve probably already been inside Montana Chads, located at 3953 Montana Ave. Olive and Mr. Bitters are no strangers to their late-night offerings and have poorly two-stepped around a parquet floor on occasion. However, our experiences were usually later in the evening and after a few rounds, so the specific memories are a little hazy. We felt we were in need of a refresher. Continue Reading →

Uberbrew works with Denver brewer for Collaboration Fest

Yeast

There’s no lack of contests and competitions for brewers these days, but Mark Hastings thinks there’s none better than the one he’ll be taking part in this March in Denver. The concept of Collaboration Fest—set for March 19—is pretty simple: at least two brewers, one of whom must be based in Colorado, join forces, come up with a new brew, work on it together and take it to the festival for judging. Make some Noise: Uberbrew bottling popular wheat beer

Noise

Uberbrew recently became the second Billings brewery to put six packs of its beer on retail shelves. The Yellowstone Valley Brewing Co. has been doing so for years with a bottling operation attached to its brewery at 2123 First Ave. N.

Uberbrew owners Mark Hastings and Jason Shroyer are going a bit different route—having their popular White Noise hefeweizen bottled at the Fort Collins Brewery in Colorado. (more…) Continue Reading →
