Bridges talks about Montana in advance of Missoula show

Bridges

Hunger is not political discourse to Jeff Bridges. When the actor discusses the inability of children to access food, reduced food quality, the importance of food banks or federal nutrition programs, he evaluates them as societal or communal problems as opposed to explicitly political ones. Author says park’s smaller mammals need attention, too

Marmot

CODY, WYO. — Grizzly bears, gray wolves and bison top the list of animals that literally stop traffic across Yellowstone National Park all summer long. But if one Wyoming researcher had his way, park visitors would be snapping a lot more photos of fringe-tailed bats and golden-mantled ground squirrels. (more…) Continue Reading →

Rock Pile in remodel, soon to be 406 Kitchen & Taproom

406

The Rock Pile, a Billings sports bar that closed on Christmas Eve for a complete renovation, is scheduled to reopen this summer as the 406 Kitchen and Taproom, complete with a rooftop patio. The new bar-restaurant will serve a wide variety of bottled and tap beers and will have a “chef-inspired menu” of bar foods with a twist, according to co-owner Jake Brosovich. The Bar Tab: Mr. Bitters, Olive to give pens, livers a break

Drinks

After weeks of strong cocktails, mediocre wine and lots of draft beer, we’ve decided to give our livers a break. This strange journey has given us a glimpse into many of Billings’ finest watering holes and we’ve enjoyed the escape. As we return to our normal, boring, professional routine, we thought it would be appropriate to leave you with a few recommendations. So without further ado, here are a few of our favorites in the Magic City: (more…) Continue Reading →

Montana Viewpoint: Keeping a wary eye on a crazy primary

Jim

This has to be the most entertaining primary election that I’ve ever witnessed, and I’m not sure that’s a good thing. My particular favorite among the Republican candidates, Jeb Bush, just dropped out and I suspect it was because he was not as big a charlatan as the others. Kasich will be next for the same reason. The wearing of cowboy hats and the folly of ‘blending in’

Monkey

I tried on a cowboy hat once. As a tourist from Scotland in Billings, it seemed like something I should do. It’s difficult to describe how I looked. Some time ago, I saw a George Clooney movie where he wore one of those baggy caps popular in the 1920s and the effect was pretty damned impressive, as though he was born to wear it. The Bar Tab: Daytime outing sheds new light on Chads

chad

Have you ever had a hankering for some live music, dancing, draft beer and big crowds? If so, you’ve probably already been inside Montana Chads, located at 3953 Montana Ave. Olive and Mr. Bitters are no strangers to their late-night offerings and have poorly two-stepped around a parquet floor on occasion. However, our experiences were usually later in the evening and after a few rounds, so the specific memories are a little hazy. We felt we were in need of a refresher. Continue Reading →

In Montana, leading the charge in rethinking ‘vacation’

Lake

The Onion, the spoof online news outlet, recently ran a hilarious headline that read: “Health Experts Recommend Standing Up At Desk, Leaving Office, Never Coming Back”

The reason it’s funny is that it includes a dark strain of truth. Nearly 60 percent of workers consider themselves “disengaged” from their jobs. In fact, I bet many of you might be reading this at a desk where you wish you were doing something else. (more…) Continue Reading →
