Blue language on the greens, and a very odd coincidence

Swolf

I hold a world record at golf and it’s one I’m rather proud of. It happened at the fourth hole of my local course, here on the east coast of Scotland. In the five seconds between my ball leaving the clubface and splashing into a pond 100 yards right of the fairway, I managed to swear 17 times. Apparently, this beat the previous record of 14, held by someone called Frankie “Foul-Mouth” McFadden at a course in northern Idaho. (more…) Continue Reading →

NPR’s ‘Morning Edition’ tours state, airs from Bozeman

Feed

BOZEMAN — Brian Leland didn’t care that he had to wake up around 2 a.m. Friday in order to watch a live broadcast of National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” at Feed Café. Wearing a T-shirt that proclaimed he was a part of “The Green Coalition of Gay Loggers for Jesus” and brown Carhartt jeans, Leland said he attended to represent a cross-section of Bozeman. Karen Stevenson remembers talking to a Miles City Economic Development Council class this winter in Miles City about the Buttes, Breaks, and Badlands map published last fall by the Montana Wilderness Association. LAUREL — Despite injuries to numerous participants and several spectators, Laurel city officials were beaming with pride Thursday after a wildly successful “Running of the Bison” event. “It was fantastic,” said Laurel Mayor Mark Mace, who came up with the idea for the dangerously alluring event, which he hopes will become an annual affair. “Sure, some people were hurt, but we’re a tough bunch, and everyone agreed it was great for Laurel.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Property for sale carries lots of early-Billings memories

School

There’s plenty of land for sale on the far West End of Billings, but few parcels pack as much history as a 3½-acre lot on the southwest corner of Shiloh Road and Central Avenue. On that property sits a 122-year-old one-room schoolhouse built by some of the city’s pioneer families, as well as a building that housed School District 2’s first vo-tech program. New trails add to appeal of Four Dances Natural Area

Dogs

In the Billings area, there is nothing quite like the Four Dances Natural Area. Located high above the Yellowstone across the river from the site of old Coulson, the town that preceded Billings, the natural area affords spectacular views of the valley and of the city itself. Professor looks at trendy leek, and its ‘hillbilly’ roots

Boehm

Even the humble wild leek provides fuel to keep alive centuries of stereotypes of Appalachian Americans, according to a Montana State University Billings professor. Melissa Boehm was speaking Tuesday evening in “What’s Cooking? Exploring American Food, Culture, Politics, and History,” a series of six lectures in the MSU Billings Library Lecture Series. The series started last week with a talk by Sam Boerboom on “Americans at the Table: The Political Language of Food.” (more…) Continue Reading →

The Land Rover Defender: Discontinued but immortal

Crank

On Friday, Jan. 29, the final Land Rover Defender rolled off the assembly line in the Midlands town of Solihull, England. The demise of this legendary line of four-wheel- drive automotive workhorses marks a significant milestone in automotive history. The world seems just a bit smaller and a lot softer for it.
