Prairie Lights: Heritage, history call man to protest

Jordan

Jordan Wolf Voice was planning to leave early this morning for his second trip to join the pipeline protesters in North Dakota. Wolf Voice is a 27-year-old Northern Cheyenne and Lakota. He has lived in Laurel his whole life and he works in the deli at Lucky’s Market in Billings. In late November, he spent three days at the protest against the Dakota Access pipeline, just outside the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and he’s going back for three more days out of a sense of obligation. Authors talk over era of Montana basketball legends

The rollout of two new books about high school basketball in Montana turned into an appreciation of basketball legend Larry Pretty Weasel here on Wednesday. Pretty Weasel is widely considered the best Indian high school basketball player in Montana history, and some people call him Montana’s greatest high school basketball player, period. He also is a key character in a new book by a Hardin teammate, Steven E. Dyche, author of “Integrated Basketball at the Little Big Horn: A 1957 Success Story.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Despite injuries, Laurel bison run considered a big success

LAUREL — Despite injuries to numerous participants and several spectators, Laurel city officials were beaming with pride Thursday after a wildly successful “Running of the Bison” event. “It was fantastic,” said Laurel Mayor Mark Mace, who came up with the idea for the dangerously alluring event, which he hopes will become an annual affair. “Sure, some people were hurt, but we’re a tough bunch, and everyone agreed it was great for Laurel.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Pioneer

I can’t bring myself to criticize the officials in Los Angeles who decided to cancel school last Tuesday in response to a terrorist threat received by email. People were already jittery in the wake of the killings in nearby San Bernardino, so the authenticity of the threat had to be weighed against some very real fears and some daunting responsibilities. ROCKVALE—It’s been slow going on Highway 212 near Rockvale this week. As part of the reconstruction of Highway 212 between Rockvale and south of Laurel, which began early last year and won’t be completed until 2017 at the earliest, the asphalt surface of 212 from Rockvale to a point about a mile northeast of there is being milled off this week. Pictures from a variety of Montana expeditions

Fog

At the end of what must have been one of the most open winters in the history of Montana—a year after one of the snowiest winters on record—it occurs to me that I didn’t do nearly as much traveling as I should have. And then it occurs to me that when I set out on my first big out-of-town trip this winter, to do a story on the Beaver Creek Brewery in Wibaux way back in mid-November, it was snowing, windy and bitterly cold. Mobile missionary ‘reaching many people’

Mission

Dennis LaMotte’s Jeep, trailer, canoe and bicycle are all painted in camouflage green, but the paint wouldn’t hide it from the meter maids. That’s why he was looking to make change for a dollar when I ran into him Monday morning a couple of blocks east of the courthouse. He had to feed two meters to accommodate his mission on wheels.
