From the Outpost: What it means to be ‘educated’

Small

Before his death on Sunday, Lawrence F. Small was the living emblem of Rocky Mountain College. He taught history there for decades, served as dean and as president, founded the Institute for Peace Studies and literally wrote the book about Rocky, “Courageous Journey,” a history of the school. My mostly-on relationship with Rocky goes back 14 years, but that’s not how I knew Small. Instead, he was a member of the Geriatric Writers Kaffeeklatsch, whose Wednesday afternoon meetings I try to attend. (more…) Continue Reading →

South Side service station nearing end of a long tradition

Cop cars

Back in 1954, when Robert Wilson Dunham opened a new Standard Oil service station in Billings, it was one of 19 stations stretched out along what is now First Avenue South. Sixty-one years later, Wilson Dunham Service, now a Conoco station, is still going strong, and it is the only business of its kind on First Avenue South. And it’s still owned by a Robert Wilson Dunham, though this one is the son of the founder and goes by the nickname Bud. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Downtown Billings Alliance is hoping to round up supporters of a bill that would allow cities to pass laws prohibiting public intoxication. Passage of Senate Bill 360, introduced by Sen. County museum exhibit tells local story of World War I

Pants

Among the contributions made by residents of Yellowstone County to achieve victory in World War I was the tireless needlework of Peter Peroe. The Red Cross encouraged people to abandon their dainty knitting and instead create regulation clothing and supplies for American soldiers. In response, knitters in Yellowstone County made more than 26,500 items and knit more than 22,000 garments. (more…) Continue Reading →

To catch a thief: Facebook helps teen recover stolen truck

Hayden

Thanks to the power of Facebook—and a bit of old-fashioned shoe leather—Dana Moss Pulis helped her son get his stolen pickup truck back barely half a day after it was stolen. Here’s the story, as pieced together by Moss Pulis, who owns a business in downtown Billings. (more…) Continue Reading →

Old-school hat maker stands by traditional methods, tools

Pose

“If the hat fits, wear it,” goes the saying. But what if it doesn’t? My partner had searched for a western hat at all the usual ranch supply and western outfit stores of Billings, but none of them had the size (“h” for huge) or fit he required. In desperation, he decided to let the experts at Rand’s Custom Hatters help him with his mission. (more…) Continue Reading →

Photo Gallery: A stroll through a downtown neighborhood

Truck

A little east of downtown Billings, there is an odd little neighborhood that is not really quite a neighborhood. The area I’m thinking of is bounded on the east and west by 15th and 22nd streets north, and on the north and south by Fourth and First avenues north. It is a hodgepodge of houses, industrial businesses and vacant lots. (more…) Continue Reading →
