School officials vow to deal with Daylis noise complaints

In response to neighborhood complaints about loud music during football games and practices at Daylis Stadium, School District 2 officials are promising to be “responsible and responsive.” In a “Good Neighbor Plan” drafted by Mark Wahl, athletic director for Billings Public Schools, the district pledges to take steps to minimize sound outside the stadium during games, and to use separate, smaller sound equipment for practices. Prairie Lights: Listen to the neighbors, not the loud music

In the 24 years we lived on the 100 block of Avenue C, a block and a half from Daylis Stadium, I loved hearing all the various sounds on game night. There were the eruptions of cheering and the stamping of feet on the bleachers, the announcer with his updates on yards gained or lost, the pep bands with their bursts of inspiring, vaguely martial music. For Daylis neighbors, end of season brings quiet at last

Last Friday was a big day for fans of the Billings Senior High Broncs. The team ended a second consecutive perfect season by winning the Class AA football championship against Helena High. For some of the people who live near Daylis Stadium, where the championship game was played, it was a big day for a different reason. It means that until next fall, they won’t have to listen to music blaring out of Daylis’ new sound system during after-school football practice four days a week, or during Friday night games. I can’t bring myself to criticize the officials in Los Angeles who decided to cancel school last Tuesday in response to a terrorist threat received by email. People were already jittery in the wake of the killings in nearby San Bernardino, so the authenticity of the threat had to be weighed against some very real fears and some daunting responsibilities.
