D.C. filmmaker documents legendary Montana roundup

Horse

A filmmaker from Washington, D.C., and a group of Montana cowboys who still ride the range may not have much in common. But give them a few weeks together rounding up cattle in the Highwood Mountains and, as this story goes, they’ll form lasting bonds. Film director Brian Liu is in the final stages of producing his new documentary, “Only Roundup Remains,” which he filmed over the course of several years riding the Highwood cattle roundup east of Great Falls. Photo Gallery: Signs of the times, here and there

Refusal

I think the idea for this series of photos was born more than a year ago, when I laid eyes on the sign that leads off the gallery. I was walking my dog down by the sugar plant on State Avenue when I saw the old gray shed and the barely legible sign warning about the possible withholding of services. It was so odd that I went back later with my camera. (more…) Continue Reading →

Lichen researchers descend on Roundup ranch for study

The Milton Ranch north of Roundup was crawling with botanists on the cool, wet, third week in September, and Roger Rosentreter, retired state botanist for the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho, was probably the most ebullient member of the team. When he arrived back at the ranch headquarters two hours past the usual afternoon gathering time, he said, “We’ve been out searching for manna lichens! Do you know what they are? They’re the kind that blow on the wind, and came in time to save the Israelites from starving in the desert during their exodus from Egypt!” (more…) Continue Reading →

High hopes for locally made, web-based comedy series

Flag

Ted Kim thinks his web-based comedy series has two big things going for it. One is a strong concept, which he describes as “a love story about two sisters who can never get in synch,” and in fact are constantly at war. The other is that it is being filmed in Billings and Roundup, tapping into a national and even an international fascination with Montana. (more…) Continue Reading →

Family’s roots go deep in 81-year-old Rainbow Bar

Gang

Like most long-established taverns in Billings, the Rainbow Bar has always had a fair number of regulars. It’s doubtful any of them are quite as regular as Linda Jacobson. Besides having run the Rainbow for just over 30 years, she lived in rooms behind the bar as a kid and has spent virtually all of her life in and around the Montana Avenue tavern. Roundup motorcycle club raises $6,000 for vets home

45s

When motorcyclists from Roundup roared into the parking lot of Independence Hall July 11 to begin a club rally, Bill Holder wasn’t sure what might result.

Holder, director of veterans services at the Volunteers of America-operated residence hall for formerly homeless veterans, often fields offers from the community to help veterans. The Harley-riding club—called the Forty Fives—was a little different from church groups bringing in cookies or secondhand clothes. (more…) Continue Reading →

Pictures from a variety of Montana expeditions

Fog

At the end of what must have been one of the most open winters in the history of Montana—a year after one of the snowiest winters on record—it occurs to me that I didn’t do nearly as much traveling as I should have. And then it occurs to me that when I set out on my first big out-of-town trip this winter, to do a story on the Beaver Creek Brewery in Wibaux way back in mid-November, it was snowing, windy and bitterly cold. The Most Beautiful Lake in Montana

Rainbow

Lay of the Land: A series of essays on the spirit of Montana
Beauty is only skin deep? In this case, maybe a bit deeper…

I didn’t start out to find the most beautiful lake in Montana. Rather, at 59, I brushed off an old dream of bicycling solo across the United States. But to fit my dream within work, I would bike the country in multiple stretches over several years — a week or so, 3- to 400 miles at a time. (more…) Continue Reading →
