Just after 7 a.m. on the wind chilliest day of the winter, my aging Subaru sputtered to a start, spit out black smoke onto the white snow for a few minutes, then died. For better or worse. Till death do us part. (more…) Continue Reading →

Trent Inderland is looking forward even more keenly than usual to a bluegrass concert in Billings next week. Inderland, vice president and concert coordinator for the Yellowstone Bluegrass Association, is excited partly because the group that’s playing July 7 is the Gibson Brothers band, winner of numerous awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and veteran of the Grand Ole Opry. Richard Spencer messes with Texas, Montana
Richard Spencer is stirring up trouble in both my native and adopted states. Spencer, who created the term alt-right, is a resident of Whitefish. On Tuesday, he gave a speech in the Texas town where I used to live, at the university where I both taught and studied. Spencer has been spouting the virtues of the white race for years, but last month he gained a dubious national reputation for shouting “Hail Trump” at a conference in Washington, drawing Nazi-like salutes from his white supremacist fans. Even for many hardcore racists, invoking Hitler was going too far. Continue Reading →

For Rocky Mountain College, some good news
Rocky Mountain College faculty and staff got an unusually upbeat message Wednesday from President Bob Wilmouth. The annual all-campus meeting has focused in recent years on financial and enrollment challenges facing the liberal arts college. But Wilmouth told a packed auditorium today that he had good news. The college had its first positive net revenue in more than five years in 2015-16, he said. Positive revenues also are expected in 2016-17. Continue Reading →

Eye-catching Montana map art illustrates one-act festival
We went to Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Co.’s “New Works Festival” Friday night and recommend it wholeheartedly. It consists of 10 one-act plays of about 10 minutes each, all on the theme of “Welcome to Montana.” We have already described the plays in an earlier story, and will add here only that the plays, short as they are, cover a lot of ground and a lot emotional territory. Tami Haaland, state laureate, poet of ‘the best lost place’
Tami Haaland was 16 when she saw a Calgary Opera Company production of “La Traviata” in Chester, courtesy of the Chester Arts Council. It made a big impression on her, and it helps explain why she has spent so much of her adult life bringing the arts into the lives of others. (more…) Continue Reading →

Montana State University Billings’ popular lecture series on World War I, which packed the largest classroom on campus on five Tuesday evenings last fall, will resume Tuesday evening. Meant to commemorate the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, the lecture series features MSUB professors from diverse fields examining the immediate effects and continuing legacy of what was called, with a tragic optimism, “the war to end all wars.” (more…) Continue Reading →

From the Terry Tribune to Sin City’s toast of the town
Norm Clarke agrees: he’s come a long way from his small-town start. His lengthy journalism career began when he was in high school in his Eastern Montana hometown of Terry. The personable Clarke talked the editor of the local weekly newspaper, the Terry Tribune, into letting him report on a Class C basketball tournament in a nearby town. (more…) Continue Reading →
