At a public forum next week, former U.S. Ambassador to China and former U.S. Sen. Max Baucus of Montana and former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson from Wyoming will discuss the current dysfunction in the U.S. Senate and the political system and the role civility may play in repairing the political process. (more…) Continue Reading →

On North Korea, Baucus urges less tweeting, more diplomacy

North Korea has no intention of ending its nuclear ambitions and China won’t allow the peninsula to fall into chaos, two factors that may force the U.S to accept the north as a nuclear power, the former U.S. ambassador to China said this week. (more…) Continue Reading →

At the Pekin Noodle Parlor in Butte, history’s on the menu

BUTTE—On a visit to Butte early last fall, I heard two things over and over again. One was that Danny Wong’s hot mustard at the Pekin Noodle Parlor would clear your sinuses. The other was that the Chinese in early-day Butte had built tunnels under much of the Uptown and used them for a variety of nefarious purposes, including drug-running and kidnapping. Unusual footrace highlights Montana’s varied terrain
|
For some of us, the approach of fall—with its distinct smells, light and colors—is indistinguishable from the approach of cross-country running season. Many of these folks in Montana’s running community will gather on Saturday, Oct. 31, for one of the most unusual footraces in the state—a cross-country race known as the Montana Cup. Patrick Judge, president of the Helena Vigilante Runners and race director for this year’s edition of the cup, describes the event as “a team cross-country running event similar to a high-school or collegiate race, but open to everyone.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Prairie Lights: Looking back on a strange, snowy year
|
As the New Year dawned a year ago this week, most people in Montana were already sick and tired of winter, of endless days of bitter cold and snowstorms that raged with Arctic intensity. Billings was hit particularly hard. At one point in mid-February the snow was so deep that only the top seven floors of the First Interstate Building were visible. (more…) Continue Reading →

In Montana, at least, voters 1, dark money 0

I said two weeks ago that there was always something on an election ballot that made me feel good about voting. This year, there were two things in particular: voting against the legislative referendum that would have ended Election Day voter registration and voting for state Supreme Court Justice Mike Wheat. Max Baucus: A long career, a long goodbye
|
You hate to kick a guy while he’s up, but is anyone else weary of the relentlessly laudatory news stories about former Sen. Max Baucus? After Baucus was nominated and then won confirmation as the new U.S. ambassador to China, it was inevitable that barrels of ink would be spilled to chronicle his 39-year run as a House member and senator. My two cents on Two Dot
|
Here’s a good story from Tom Lutey about Max Baucus’ last shot of whiskey at the Two Dot Bar. I have my own rather minor story about the Two Dot Bar. Many years ago, when my youngest daughter was barely 3, she and I drove from Billings to Boulder to visit a friend of mine. We stopped in Two Dot because — well, how can you not stop in Two Dot when you’re driving down Highway 12? (more…) Continue Reading →
