A good friend gone, a magical canyon close to home

For years, I’ve wanted to write about Cottonwood Canyon, a strangely beautiful high-desert hideaway about 15 miles south of Bridger. I never did, though, because I had considered it as somehow belonging to my good friend, Tim Arneson, who first showed it to me more than 30 years ago. I suppose Cottonwood Canyon is his forever now. Former bar owner salvages life’s work one item at a time

BRIDGER — A patio table in Shirley Smith’s backyard is covered with soot-blackened artifacts, including a set of antique handcuffs, an old fig syrup bottle and a partially melted saddle bronc trophy from a rodeo in Malta. Bridger farm: Growing healthy food for local consumers

BRIDGER — Marguerite Jodry was majoring in music at the University of Montana when she found her way into the local food movement. She worked in Sheridan, Wyo., on an AmeriCorps-VISTA food project, then worked as an intern at the Amaltheia Organic Dairy in Belgrade, where she arrived amid the kidding season. “I was a goat midwife,” she said.
