One Big Sky Center could get larger, developer says

The Billings City Council heard a brief update Monday night from the president of the company that has taken the lead on a proposal to build a multimillion-dollar project in downtown Billings —which could be larger than originally planned. Bob Dunn, president of the Hammes Co., didn’t have much new information to share Monday, but he did say the partners involved in the One Big Sky Center would have a “concept development plan” done in November. Chamber assigns grades to city candidates

The Billings Chamber of Commerce handed out six A’s and only one F in its evaluation of the 21 candidates running for six seats on the Billings City Council. The ratings also included five B’s, eight C’s and a lone D. Candidates were rated mostly on how they responded to a Chamber questionnaire, with some weight given to past experiences and “demonstrable community leadership.” The F went to Ward 2 candidate Frank Ewalt, who did not respond to the questionnaire. It took about an hour into a 90-minute public forum, but candidates for Billings mayor finally found things to disagree about on Tuesday. Four of six candidates for mayor appeared at the forum, which was sponsored by the Yellowstone Democratic Club. Ulvestad to run for City Council again in Ward 5

Dennis Ulvestad says he’s ready to make his fifth run for the Billings City Council. In a press release from Lori Johnson, described as his campaign and public relations manager, Ulvestad said he will be running again in Ward 5. He ran for the same seat unsuccessfully every two years between 2009 and 2015. Filing for city elections opens Thursday, with the mayoralty and five City Council seats up for grabs this year. Ulvestad was born in Glasgow and moved to Billings with his family in 1957, graduating from Billings West High School in 1968. Continue Reading →

With three days to go before candidates can file to run in Billings municipal races, it’s already shaping up to be an unusually interesting election year. Architect Randy Hafer became the first person to throw his hat in the ring, announcing earlier this month that he intends to run for mayor.
