Last Best News will be 2 years old Monday morning. We’re happy to report that Year Two was another good one. As I wrote on our first anniversary, we had 351,293 visits to the site in Year One, or just under 1,000 a day. In the past year, as of Saturday, we more than doubled that, with 708,672 visits, just under 2,000 a day. (more…) Continue Reading →

If any proof were needed that the Billings Gazette is utterly and completely out of touch with its readers, just read this unsigned editorial from a few days ago. The headline, I’m afraid, says it all: “Montana can’t stake its future on coal.” (more…) Continue Reading →

When I began reading the Newsweek magazine article about moving the St. Louis Rams to Billings, I thought it was a joke. But I read on and then read it again and—what the hell? It might still be a joke, but John Walters, who wrote the column for Newsweek’s online edition Friday, did his homework and made a case for Billings that almost sounded convincing. You may have seen the news that a researcher in California claims that there is no Missoula. The Nevada County (Calif.) Scooper reported last week that Skyy Wolford, of North San Juan, Calif., had concluded that Missoula “is an elaborate hoax and does not exist.” (more…) Continue Reading →

It was a big year for news, all around the world and right here in Montana, where we did our best to remain in the very top ranks of Very Weird States. Let’s look back at the year that was:
It began with an occurrence that no one would have thought possible: a pipeline broke, spilling oil into the Yellowstone River. (more…) Continue Reading →

If Tim Blixseth was released from jail in time for Christmas, it didn’t make the news. The last story I saw was dated Dec. 22 and said that lawyers for the “real estate mogul,” as he is usually described, had asked the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for an emergency order that would allow him to spend Christmas with his family. I’m assuming he wasn’t let out of the Great Falls jail where he has spent the past eight months. Is it a violation of the Christmas spirit to admit that it warmed my heart to think of him still stuck in the cooler? Continue Reading →

I can’t bring myself to criticize the officials in Los Angeles who decided to cancel school last Tuesday in response to a terrorist threat received by email. People were already jittery in the wake of the killings in nearby San Bernardino, so the authenticity of the threat had to be weighed against some very real fears and some daunting responsibilities. When my youngest daughter was in junior high or high school, I said something to her about a major episode of World War II. I was surprised that she hadn’t heard of it. “They never taught us about the war,” she said. “All we heard about was the Holocaust.” (more…) Continue Reading →

It had been a few years, but there was no mistaking him. I was walking down by the river with my dogs when I saw him, ahead of me on the trail about a quarter mile away. The wind was blowing hard and the man’s long white beard was standing out from his chin almost horizontally. (more…) Continue Reading →

Mike Jolley, the sheriff down in Harris County, Ga., has been making headlines for erecting an in-your-face sign in front of his office. “Warning,” the sign reads: “Harris County is politically incorrect. We say: Merry Christmas, God Bless America and In God We Trust. We salute our troops and our flag. If this offends you … LEAVE!” Continue Reading →
