Fundraiser helps remember Wade Christiansen

Wade Christiansen ran out of chances in May 2013. But chances for other wounded veterans live on through Operation Second Chance, a group he worked with in Red Lodge. Operation Second Chance and partners are holding a barbecue fundraiser on Sunday, July 3, to raise money for the Wade Christiansen Purple Heart Scholarship Fund, which is administered at Montana State University Bozeman. No place like home, Hardin physician finds

Morissette’s family goes back four generations in Hardin. Her great-grandfather, she said, essentially kidnapped and eloped with her great-grandmother, and they became homesteaders at Hardin. BALLANTINE — On her husband’s farm 25 miles east of downtown Billings, Kate Vogel is standing amid green blades of annual ryegrass on what would normally be bare soil between silage stalks. She is holding a forage collard plant, its tangled roots clinging to a big mass of black dirt. Home on the Range set standard for energy efficiency

When the Northern Plains Resource Council opened its Home on the Range building in 2006, it wanted to make a point about the importance of sustainable, energy-efficient building practices. It also wanted to save money. When NPRC celebrates the 10th anniversary of the building at 220 S. 27th St. on Saturday, it will argue that it has done both. The event, from 10 a.m. to noon, will include the dedication of a new solar array that is designed to offset all of the building’s electricity costs. Continue Reading →

Dogs, humans to gather in honor of ‘Walking Tom’

Thursday night, many of the people and the dogs who considered Tom Weaver their friend will take to the sidewalks on either side of Broadway in downtown Red Lodge, to mark Weaver’s death and to remember his life. “I was a pretty good friend of Tom’s,” Gordie Blevins said. “I’m not saying I was his best friend, but my dog was probably his best friend. Red Lodge mayor announces resignation as of June 29

Red Lodge Mayor Ed Williams announced Tuesday evening that he will be resigning as of June 29, one day before the the official last day of Police Chief Steve Hibler, who announced his resignation on April 6. Williams could not be reached for comment, but Diane Dimich, a member of Red Lodge Community Oversight Representatives, confirmed that the mayor announced his resignation shortly after the start of a 7 p.m. meeting of the Red Lodge City Council on Tuesday. Baker firefighters wed, then quickly respond to disaster

Hugo and Becca Bumgardner were wed Saturday evening in Marmarth, N.D., 15 miles east of their home in Baker. Like nine or 10 people on hand for the wedding, Hugo and Becca are members of the Baker Rural Fire Department. Openly transgender woman to make history at convention

The Montana Democratic Party will send a diverse delegation to the national convention in Philadelphia later this year, including several Native Americans and the first openly transgender woman to represent the state at a national convention. During the party’s state convention in Helena this weekend, Democrats selected 10 delegates for Hillary Clinton and 11 for Bernie Sanders. The party retains six super delegates, including Gov. Train ride is a wonderful outing, a worthy cause

Jeremy Lundblad, a Montana Highway Patrol trooper who lives in Laurel, went on the first train ride of his life Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t a terribly long trip—Billings to Pompeys Pillar and back, in about two hours—but it was an enjoyable, memorable ride. “I normally work weekends because that’s when all the fun stuff happens,” he said. “But luckily I was off today.”

So were dozens of other law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs and other first responders and their families—about 250 people all told—who were guests of BNSF Railway. They came from towns all over Yellowstone County. Continue Reading →
