ROCKVALE—It’s been slow going on Highway 212 near Rockvale this week. As part of the reconstruction of Highway 212 between Rockvale and south of Laurel, which began early last year and won’t be completed until 2017 at the earliest, the asphalt surface of 212 from Rockvale to a point about a mile northeast of there is being milled off this week. Birdtail

For a brief period in the 1860s, camels imported from North Africa were used as pack animals in the gold camps of western Montana. The camels proved useful, according to Ellen Baumler, an author and interpretive historian at the Montana Historical Society, but they fell out of favor for one simple reason. What did you do in the war, Grandpa?

Draft

Among the beauties of growing old is recalling exactly where you were and what you were doing when historic events happened:

The Cuban Missile Crisis; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Bobby Kennedy; Richard Nixon’s resignation; the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Fall of Saigon, 40 years ago last week. (more…) Continue Reading →

I started Red Ants Pants out of necessity. I had no interest in being in business; I just needed work pants that fit. It is a huge honor that this entrepreneurial adventure is taking me to the White House for a second time, but I need your help. (more…) Continue Reading →

POPLAR — Starting next week, after she retires on May 1, Vina Smith intends to slow down. Those who know her well will believe it when they see it. For 18 years, as the environmental educator for the Fort Peck Tribes, she has been a tireless teacher, role model and activist. She has helped plant thousands of trees, organized annual cleanup days, started recycling programs and made presentations at conferences across the country. (more…) Continue Reading →

Miles City has high hopes for Ag Advancement Center

Ag

MILES CITY—Wally Badgett is one of many people looking forward to construction of a $3.2 million Agricultural Advancement Center on the west end of Miles City. He coaches the rodeo team at Miles Community College, the only team in the region without an indoor arena. But the rodeo season is in the fall and spring, so most of the time the team does just fine outdoors, and in a pinch it can rent a private indoor arena outside of town. (more…) Continue Reading →

Store

HYSHAM—In this Yellowstone River town 75 miles east of Billings, residents have learned how to get things done on a shoestring. When the town’s 60-year-old swimming pool started leaking—as much as 1,000 gallons a day before it was closed last summer—supporters of a new pool got to work. (more…) Continue Reading →

Tax cheats flock to Montana to buy tax-free vehicles, RVs

Car lots

There are many good reasons to live in Montana—and one of them is so good that increasing numbers of people are only pretending to live here. That reason? Montana has no sales tax. That means out-of-state residents who set up a limited liability company in Montana could buy an expensive vehicle, or, better yet, a very expensive RV, in the company’s name and avoid tens of thousands of dollars in sales taxes in the state where they actually live.
