Back in May, I suggested to Ed Kemmick a photo essay on winter hikes because I did them every day — in squalls, sleet, freezing storms — in the foothills of the Beartooths where I live. It was to be a frigid reminder now of the season change, something to recall when blistering summer came on. (more…) Continue Reading →

Happy June, bug fans! Last month’s column explored the world of baby bugs through the lives of two ludicrous larvae, both of which used their butts to some awesome ends. This month, it’s all about the parents. (more…) Continue Reading →

Scotsman’s love of Montana tempered by misgivings
|
I first visited Montana, from my home in Scotland, in 1993, and it’s fair to say that I fell in love with the place. So much so that, over the next 21 years, I would return another five times. At one stage, I seriously considered crossing the Atlantic and living there permanently. My career presented no problems. I was a creator and writer of newspaper comic strips and, theoretically, could work from anywhere in the world. (more…) Continue Reading →

Brushstroke by brushstroke, Terri Porta is telling the history of Billings on an enormous downtown canvas. That canvas is made up of the walls and ceiling at the entrance to the City Hall parking garage on Second Avenue North. Porta started working on the huge mural on May 7 and plans to finish up by the end summer, when she will have left her mark on an estimated 4,600 square feet of wall and ceiling space. Rain? Ticks? At Audubon, kids learn to live with nature
|
As kids trooped into the Montana Audubon Center last week, they gave no indication of being daunted by a steady rain. It helped that all of them had been issued rain boots and heavy-duty rain pants and jackets. It also helped that nearly all of them were more focused on the squirming worms, picked up along the way, that they were holding in their hands. (more…) Continue Reading →
