Bookstore board has good news, but struggles lie ahead

Owner-members of a cooperative bookstore in downtown Billings heard a bit of good news at the store’s annual meeting Wednesday night, but also some sobering statements about what might lie ahead. Carrie La Seur, board president for This House of Books, said that after months of losing money, the store had enough money last month to pay the rent and meet payroll without borrowing money, for the first time in three months. Striking pedestrian bridge would access MetraPark

Plans for a multimillion-dollar pedestrian bridge that would provide access to MetraPark across Exposition Drive will be unveiled April 19 at the annual meeting of the Billings Industrial Revitalization District. Those plans call for an eye-catching steel bridge faced with wood and stone that would stretch 175 to 200 feet over Exposition Drive where it meets Third Avenue North. (more…) Continue Reading →

Vince Larsen: A good citizen’s full life inspired many

Two things surprised me about Vince Larsen’s obituary, which appeared in the Gazette on Tuesday. The first surprise was his age. I don’t know that I ever thought how old he was, but 87? Robson out as manager of This House of Books

Gary Robson is no longer the CEO and general manager of This House of Books in downtown Billings. Details are scarce, but apparently the independent cooperative bookstore has been struggling financially since it opened Oct. 1, and with the departure of Robson and the manager of the store’s new tea bar, there are only two full-time employees. Local group forms to fight use of animals in circuses

A newly formed group opposed to the use of animals in circuses is planning a series of protests during the 66th Annual Al Bedoo Shrine Circus in Billings. Montanans Against Animal Circuses is planning its main protest for noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the Shrine Auditorium, 1125 Broadwater Ave., but it intends to have at least some protesters at each of the nine shows scheduled for March 29 through April 2. Kurth brothers team up for new music festival in Billings

Judge clears way for ex-worker’s suit against St. Vincent

A federal judge has cleared the way for Billings woman’s wrongful termination lawsuit against St. Vincent Healthcare. In ruling issued Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Watters granted one motion for summary judgment filed by St. Vincent but denied all its other claims, allowing Roxanna Jackson’s lawsuit against the hospital to proceed to trial. Professional theater company launched in Billings

Craig Huisenga was still living in San Diego eight years ago when he came up with the idea of starting the Yellowstone Repertory Theatre. He was thinking of returning to Billings to care for his aging parents, but having
