A day in the sun for Run for Life participants
To the hundreds of participants in Saturday’s Run for Life Run/Walk, it may have felt a bit like July, when the annual Relay for Life of Yellowstone County comes around. But unseasonable heat for the fourth annual Run for Life didn’t seem to bother the crowd, estimated at more than 400. The run raises funds for the Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. The 2017 event is July 7 at the Billings West High School track. (more…) Continue Reading →

At ZooMontana, tigers, bears and princesses, oh my!

Fans of Disney princesses, many of the younger ones dressed up like their favorite movie characters, turned out for the first of two Princess Day events at ZooMontana on Friday. Last year’s Princess Day was such a big hit, it was expanded to two days for 2017. The princesses held court in settings scattered across the zoo grounds. The new ice-cream man in town is a young woman, but don’t look for her in a three-wheeled cart blaring calliope music. Bailey Scott, a 19-year-old freshman at Rocky Mountain College, will be driving a big sky-blue van with pink trim, and she’ll mostly be doing special events and private parties. A bit of excitement in downtown Billings
And some people think living in downtown Billings is uneventful. My daughter called me about 3 in the afternoon Sunday to let me know that a cow was running loose on South 30th Street a block west of the Montana Rescue Mission. Since I live nearby, I raced down with my camera. (more…) Continue Reading →

Workers flood in for refinery’s biggest ‘turnaround’ ever
As many as 1,800 refinery workers from far corners of the country are converging in Billings until mid-June, doing round-the-clock work on the Phillips 66 refinery during its largest-ever planned maintenance period. The refinery, which normally employs about 300 full-time workers, is in the midst of what’s known as a turnaround, a maintenance event that refineries undergo every five years. It involves shutting everything down, bringing in a host of outside help and working 24 hours a day to complete all the maintenance the refinery needs in order to go the next five years. Interest already high in upcoming Billings city election
With three days to go before candidates can file to run in Billings municipal races, it’s already shaping up to be an unusually interesting election year. Architect Randy Hafer became the first person to throw his hat in the ring, announcing earlier this month that he intends to run for mayor. The mayor’s race is wide open because Tom Hanel, having served two consecutive terms, can’t run again this year. (more…) Continue Reading →

One hundred years to the day after the United States entered World War I, 23 female veterans of that conflict received a long-overdue salute.
