Surprise guests a big hit at Magic City Music Awards

Quartet

In an awards show packed with youthful energy and frenetic performances, the hit of the night at the 17th annual Magic City Music Awards on Sunday might have been Norrine “The Outlaw Queen” Linderman, who’s been performing in the Billings area since the late 1940s. Linderman, winner of last year’s Freeman Lacy Award, created to recognize musicians with a long history of contributing to the Billings music scene, was just well enough to pick up her award last year, but too ill to sing. Parking garage, skybridge would serve Stillwater Building

Skybridge

Plans are underway to build a six-level, 430-stall parking garage across the street from the former James F. Battin federal courthouse, now known as the Stillwater Building. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon by Eggart Engineering and Construction, the Billings contractor renovating the old courthouse at 316 N. 26th St. on behalf of the building’s owners, WC Commercial LLC, out of Alaska. Plans call for linking the parking garage to the Stillwater Building with a skybridge. (more…) Continue Reading →

She talked about different ideas with Julie Koerber, editor of the magazine, and with her husband and business partner, Jeremy Vannatta, “but nothing ever seemed to fit,” she said. Here’s how often those seeking your vote cast ballots

Brown

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to include the voting record of George Blackard, a City Council candidate in Ward 4, who was inadvertently left out of the original story. Among the 12 people running for Billings City Council and the mayor’s office this year, three have perfect voting records, casting ballots in every election as far back as electronic records stretch. One Big Sky Center could get larger, developer says

Dunn

The Billings City Council heard a brief update Monday night from the president of the company that has taken the lead on a proposal to build a multimillion-dollar project in downtown Billings —which could be larger than originally planned. Bob Dunn, president of the Hammes Co., didn’t have much new information to share Monday, but he did say the partners involved in the One Big Sky Center would have a “concept development plan” done in November. The council previously set a Dec. 11 deadline for completing a development agreement between the city and the developers. (more…) Continue Reading →

Interest in this year’s City Council and mayoral races continues to run high. At this school, students learn rudiments of rock ‘n’ roll

Singer

Earlier this week, at a group lesson for students in the Free Spirit Rock School, Sharon Mulvehill was sitting in on bass guitar. She normally plays a regular guitar, and she wasn’t all that familiar with the bass line for the first song of the night, Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” Bill Dickman, the school’s guitar teacher and musical director, who happened to be sitting in on drums, stopped the song and briefly, a little impatiently, told Mulvehill what she should be playing. Friends, colleagues recall a one-of-a-kind public servant

Kurt

Early in 2001, shortly after Kurt Corey, then director of Public Works for the city of Billings, had accepted a similar job in Eugene, Ore., I wrote a story about his imminent departure. He had been officiating high school football and basketball games for 20 years, and he told me he wasn’t sure he’d have the time to continue refereeing once he got to Oregon.
