Jennings and Kassidy Miller rehearse a scene from &#8220;The Cow,&#8221; an absurdist comedy by Richard Leeds.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A festival of 10 one-act plays was put together by the Sacrifice Cliff Theatre Company as the result of what amounted to a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year,\u201d said company co-founder Patrick Wilson, \u201cI\u2019d been hearing a lot of people asking, \u2018are there even any writers left in Billings who want to get their plays on stage?\u2019\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Wilson and co-founder Shad Allen Scott were convinced there were, and they came up with a list of 30 people who they thought might want to take part in a one-act festival. They approached 20 of those writers with their idea and soon selected 10.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson and Matt Taggart, a local artist, came up with the theme, \u201cWelcome to Montana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson and Scott settled on the idea of 10-minute plays because that length was considered do-able for a collection of writers who are either busy in the theater scene already or, in the case of several of them, new to writing for the stage.<\/p>\n<p>One of the plays was created by a pair of collaborators who aren\u2019t even writers\u2014Taggart, who normally does sound art, collages and mail art, and Krista Marshall, a dancer with the Terpsichore Dance Company.<\/p>\n<p>Their piece is \u201cAll Together Now,\u201d about a family coming back together for a Sunday dinner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think for the whole thing, everybody has been out of their comfort zone,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>The festival opens Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m. at Montana State University-Billings&#8217; Studio Six, formerly LA 620. (See below for details.)<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"well\"><div class=\"dfad dfad_pos_1 dfad_first\" id=\"_ad_652\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/mjhWkW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/201703_capeair_variable.jpg\" alt=\"CapreAir_Variable\" width=\"510\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18069\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>Wilson said the festival is in keeping with the mission of the theater company, which he and Scott founded two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to be more artist-responsive and as local as we could,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For Richard Leeds, that meant getting the chance to expand his horizons. An experienced actor whose previous writing experience was limited to a couple of other short one-acts, Leeds was encouraged by Wilson and Scott to try his hand at writing again.<\/p>\n<p>He came up with \u201cThe Cow,\u201d a piece of absurdist comedy set on the University of Montana campus in Missoula. He chose one of his short stories, \u201cThis Is Butte. You Have Ten Minutes,\u201d about a bus ride across Montana.<\/p>\n<p>Lancaster said Wilson wrote the script based on his story, and all he did was some minor tweaking to the script. Writers were invited to as many rehearsals as they wanted, but Lancaster has gone only to the first read-through and can\u2019t wait to see what happens to his story on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have so much respect for that particular art form that I haven\u2019t wanted to intercede with it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s their story now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott was one of three experienced playwrights who contributed a piece for the festival. Wilson said Scott\u2019s piece, like that of playwright Ryan Gage, is \u201ca searing, wincing kind of satire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s piece is called \u201cDarrell\u2019s Downtown,\u201d inspired by Billings Gazette editor Darrell Ehrlick, whose pre-Christmas <a href=\"http:\/\/billingsgazette.com\/news\/opinion\/editorial\/from-the-editor\/from-the-editor-downtown-billings-needs-to-clean-up-its\/article_ac345aaf-352b-5db1-840b-265fe7befc78.html\">column<\/a> on the perils and pestiferousness of downtown Billings sparked <a href=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/2015\/01\/downtown-backers-making-the-best-of-a-bad-situation\/\">an intense backlash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about how Billings is the most dangerous place in the world,\u201d Scott said. \u201cIt was really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gage\u2019s play, \u201c@Joshsellshisidea,\u201d is about an ad exec who tries to convince the Montana Board of Tourism to adopt a completely realistic ad campaign about Montana, complete with references to crystal meth and cars flying off the highway in a blizzard.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten Pett, a native of Cohagen in Garfield County, contributed \u201cWindblown,\u201d a play about life and love set on the vast and very windy plains of Eastern Montana. Novelist Demetra Perros weighed in with \u201cGyros in a Small Town,\u201d about growing up Greek in Helena.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Farkas, who moved here two years ago from Akron, Ohio, to teach creative writing at Rocky Mountain College, is represented by \u201cCity of Warehouses,\u201d which delivers an outsider\u2019s view of Big Sky Country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5817\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 331px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"addboard wp-image-5817 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sacrifice-Shad-1-of-1.jpg\" alt=\"Shad\" width=\"331\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-media-credit\">Ed Kemmick\/Last Best News<\/p><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Theater company co-founder Shad Allen Scott.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>New playwright Sara Grubbs of Huntley writes of a transgender youth dealing with an identity crisis. Another new writer, Delaney Kay Hardy, contributed \u201cDriving to V.C.,\u201d based on her frequent drives between Virginia City and Bozeman when she spent a summer acting with the Virginia City Players.<\/p>\n<p>She and Scott decided to break her play into six short scenes that will be interspersed between other plays in the festival. Wilson said it was not surprising that Hardy\u2019s piece, and some of the others, play out in transit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just fascinated by how people are approaching the theme, \u2018Welcome to Montana,\u2019\u201d Wilson said. \u201cA lot of pieces are about driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The acting company consists of Adam Roebling, C.J. Jennings, Kassidy Miller, Kenedee Burk, Vanessa Dent and Trevor Biondich, and Wilson and Scott also do some acting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details<\/strong>: The one-act festival will run at 7 p.m. on March 20 and 21, March 27 and 28 and April 3 and 4 in Room 620 of the Liberal Arts building on the MSUB campus.
