Flooding near Tower Street south of the Clark Fork River in the Missoula Valley may be the start to wider flooding this week.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Missoula County Sheriff\u2019s Office began assessing evacuation warnings for residents across a wide swath of the Missoula Valley on Sunday, as floodwaters continue to push toward the major flood stage, threatening levels not seen since 1975.<\/p>\n

Sheriff T.J. McDermott said deputies will go door to door and begin visiting those residents on Monday morning. The county has identified 830 addresses in the Clark Fork River flood zone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMissoula County is already experiencing early flooding, and the forecast is that water levels will rise significantly by mid-week,\u201d McDermott said. \u201cEven though we know we\u2019re not evacuating homes today, as we move further into this process, the water can be very dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, the National Weather Service extended its flood warning for the Clark Fork River above Missoula, which had reached 10.5 feet by mid-afternoon. The river was expected to top 12 feet \u2014 the moderate flood stage \u2014 by Monday night.<\/p>\n

But the current forecast has the river pushing past 13 feet later this week. At that point, county officials said during a press briefing on Sunday, widespread flooding will occur within the Missoula Valley, from East Missoula to the Bitterroot River.<\/p>\n

That could also affect low-lying areas along Rattlesnake Creek and East Front Street, the National Weather Service said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis week is going to be interesting, because we\u2019re going to reach levels we haven\u2019t seen in some 40 years,\u201d said LeeAnn Allegretto, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Missoula. \u201cWe\u2019re only now seeing the tip of what\u2019s coming off these mountains. It\u2019s just the beginning of it, and we\u2019re trying to get out ahead of it as early as we can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last week,\u00a0minor flooding had already begun<\/a>, sending water into low-lying neighborhoods of the Missoula Valley south of the river. The inundation was enough to flood yards and basements in the area of Orchard Homes.<\/p>\n

\"CapreAir_Variable\"<\/a><\/div><\/div>This week, the river is likely to reach 13 feet, surpassing levels recorded in 2011, the last significant flood year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll get to that at the very least, if not much higher than that,\u201d Allegretto said. \u201cWe\u2019re preparing to experience flooding in places we\u2019re not sure will even flood yet, because the channel of the river has changed so much since 2011, let alone since 1975, the last time we saw it reach 13 feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was expected to arrive in Missoula on Sunday evening to begin inspecting area levees and bolstering local resources. County officials and emergency responders from Seeley Lake to Alberton were also coordinating with the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The heavy snowpack at lower elevations is melting much more quickly than usual this year, hydrologists have said. But the mid-level snowpack is still intact, leading Allegretto to suggest that flooding could be a prolonged event.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we get there, then we stay there for a while, which is another concern of ours,\u201d she said. \u201cThe snow in the 5,000- to 6,000-foot range hasn\u2019t melted yet. I think this is just the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n

A flood warning was also posted Sunday for the Blackfoot River near Bonner and other locations along the river. The Blackfoot reached 9.3 feet on Sunday and is expected to reach 10.6 feet by Thursday. The flood stage is 10 feet.<\/p>\n

A flood watch was also posted Sunday for the Bitterroot River.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just issued a flood watch for the Bitterroot today, and we do expect that will reach minor flood stage in the next 24 to 48 hours,\u201d Allegretto said. \u201cThat will remain at flood stage and experience gradual increases after that through the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ken Parks, deputy director of the Office of Emergency Management, said the county will use Smart 9-1-1 to notify residents in an emergency. The water is also considered contaminated and should be avoided.<\/p>\n

Public works will also assess county infrastructure, including roads and bridges. A public meeting is planned for Monday at 6 p.m. at Hawthorne School, located at 2835 S. Third Street.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re working very closely with the sheriff\u2019s department to identify how and where we\u2019ll be implementing some of these evacuation warnings, and possibly rise to the level of an evacuation order,\u201d Parks said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been decades since we\u2019ve seen floodwater to this extent, and it\u2019s hard to say where it will end up,\u201d he added. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of development since 1975. If you live anywhere where water can effect you, just use your head.\u201d<\/p>\n
