It\u2019s not a popular option, he said, though it may be among the only options open to the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo some degree, the U.S. has to get real, sit down and talk with China, Japan and South Korea, and try to figure out a way \u2014 it\u2019s going to be very difficult \u2014 where Kim is given assurance that we\u2019re not going to topple his regime,\u201d Baucus said. \u201cHe\u2019ll probably become a nuclear state, but he\u2019s got to be brought into the world community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the Missoula Current\u00a0on Monday, Baucus, the former U.S. ambassador to China and the longest-serving U.S. senator in Montana history, said tensions between the United States and North Korea are nothing like he\u2019s ever seen in his 40-plus years of public service.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few months, those tensions have escalated as Trump and Kim engage in Twitter wars, with the U.S. president calling Kim \u201clittle rocket man\u201d and tweeting that he \u201cwon\u2019t be around much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In return, Kim has described Trump as a \u201cmentally deranged U.S. dotard\u201d whom he would tame with fire. \u201cLunatic Trump is running headlong into ruin, taking America with him, and the poor puppet forces are following him, at the peril of their lives,\u201d the Kim regime said more recently.<\/p>\n<p>Baucus said Trump is playing into Kim\u2019s plan by engaging in such rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rhetoric is inadvisable and it\u2019s not very healthy, and it makes things more difficult,\u201d Baucus said. \u201cThat\u2019s Kim\u2019s game plan and that\u2019s what he\u2019s trying to do, and it will create many difficult questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"well\"><div class=\"dfad dfad_pos_1 dfad_first\" id=\"_ad_652\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/mjhWkW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/201703_capeair_variable.jpg\" alt=\"CapreAir_Variable\" width=\"510\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18069\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>Both Trump and Kim have squared off in what Newsweek\u00a0on Monday\u00a0labeled \u201can ever-escalating battle of words describing devastation of biblical proportions on the other\u2019s country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kim believes Trump has already issued a declaration of war against North Korea, though Congress has issued no such declaration. It\u2019s the role of Congress \u2014 not the president \u2014 to do so.<\/p>\n<p>While a U.S. war with North Korea remains possible, Baucus said, it\u2019s unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe probability is not high \u2014 it\u2019s significant, but it\u2019s not high,\u201d Baucus said. \u201cIt would be so cataclysmic and Kim wouldn\u2019t survive, so what\u2019s the point. But I think President Trump raises the heat because that\u2019s the way he has negotiated as a private businessman \u2013 punch his opponent hard to get an advantage. But that doesn\u2019t work in relationships between governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of several presidencies, the United States has relied on sanctions in an effort to bring North Korea to the table and end its race to develop nuclear weapons.
