Mary Caferro, D-Helena, said during testimony on Monday that her bill would prevent children from taking up smoking and create a revenue stream for the state\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Push made for higher taxes on cigs, tobacco<\/h4>\n<h6>By Freddy Monares<\/h6>\n<p>The sponsor of a bill that would increase the tax on cigarettes and tobacco says the generated revenue will help curtail the use of tobacco among Montana\u00a0youth and provide a raise for personal-care providers funded by Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leg.mt.gov\/bills\/2017\/billhtml\/SB0354.htm\">Senate Bill 354<\/a> would also include e-cigarette-related vaporizing substances in the tax for the first time, and allocate a majority of that money to the state\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we know is that when we raise the price of tobacco and tobacco products it has a prevent nature,\u201d said bill sponsor Sen. Mary Caferro, D-Helena. \u201cIt specifically helps with kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ron Marshall, the owner of a vape shop in Belgrade, spoke in opposition to the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m taxed at 74 percent?\u201d Marshall said. \u201cI\u2019m trying to help people better their lifestyle and improve their health, and I\u2019m treated like a demon and taxed at 74 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was the Senate Taxation Committee\u2019s first hearing of testimony on the bill.<\/p>\n<p><i>Freddy Monares is a reporter with the UM Legislative News Service, a partnership of the University of Montana School of Journalism, the Montana Broadcasters Association and the Greater Montana Foundation.<\/i><\/p>\n<h4>Bill would ban styrofoam packaging<\/h4>\n<h6>By Cole Grant<\/h6>\n<p>A bill entering the Montana House would eventually get rid of styrofoam food packaging, be it in to-go boxes or egg cartons.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Shane Morigeau, D-Missoula, said the aim is to protect the health of people and wildlife in Montana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBears get into garbage cans and eat a lot of the food that\u2019s here, and deer, and everything is just one big cycle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And we as humans ingest deer, elk, fish, all of those types of things, and it all adds up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill would work in phases: By the year 2020, restaurants would no longer be able to serve food or drinks in styrofoam.
