{"id":15679,"date":"2017-01-11T17:18:01","date_gmt":"2017-01-12T00:18:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/?p=15679"},"modified":"2017-01-11T17:18:01","modified_gmt":"2017-01-12T00:18:01","slug":"legislative-update-wednesday-jan-11","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montana-mint.com\/lastbestnews\/2017\/01\/legislative-update-wednesday-jan-11\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative update: Wednesday, Jan. 11"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"addboard alignleft wp-image-15664 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/Capitol-logo.jpeg\" alt=\"capitol-logo\" width=\"140\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a>Bill would ban sales of culturally significant Indian artifacts<\/h4>\n<h6>By Cole Grant<\/h6>\n<p>Representative George Kipp III of Heart Butte wants Montana to ban the sale of culturally significant Native American objects.\u00a0House Bill 114, which Kipp is carrying, would do just that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does not say you can\u2019t make them, hang them on your wall if you\u2019re an artist,&#8221; Kipp said. &#8220;But when you got to try to sell them, it\u2019ll discourage you from doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kipp wants the same respect given to endangered species to be given to these objects. He uses the example of getting caught trying to sell a ceremonial pipe that has eagle feathers on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they\u2019ll say, \u2018Oh, you got four eagle feathers on this pipe. You have broken a law. You are trying to sell this pipe.\u2019 So you have violated the law of the feather, but how about the object itself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill sets fines at however much the object is worth or a prison sentence of six months, or both.<\/p>\n<p>There was no opposition to HB 114 at the House Business and Labor hearing Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cole Grant is a reporter with the UM Legislative News Service, a partnership of the University of Montana School of Journalism, the Montana Broadcasters Association and the Greater Montana Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Fund eyed for highway projects<\/h4>\n<h6>By Freddy Monares<\/h6>\n<p>Lawmakers in Helena are considering a bill that would pull money from a highway special revenue fund to pay for highway construction projects.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Pro Tempore Greg Hertz is sponsoring House Bill 203 and says it\u2019s an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just can\u2019t be holding these projects, and these jobs, hostage while we want to debate this situation about the gas tax increase,\u201d Hertz said.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Steve Bullock\u2019s budget calls for paying for highway projects through increasing the gas tax. Rep.
