The winner\u2014and now the first person to\u00a0<\/em><em>have won the title twice\u2014was Pete Tolton, of Billings.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>In second place was Molly Ouellette, of Billings, and in third was Jawney Love, of Bozeman. Among the poems we heard Thursday night, our favorite was Tolton&#8217;s take on Butte, which we are publishing here with his permission:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Uptown<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m walkin\u2019 uptown<br \/>\nGot shin splints and an empty cup<br \/>\nChin up, chin up<br \/>\nDrink up, drink up<\/p>\n<p>Fare thee gentlemens<br \/>\nMy reflection<br \/>\nTarnished and fractured<br \/>\nIn shop windows shattered<br \/>\nRain\u2019s comin\u2019 in<\/p>\n<p>Past hotels that didn\u2019t last<br \/>\nBars that did<br \/>\nChurches kept up, but barely, kid<br \/>\nArt deco high rises shame the hasty new builds<br \/>\nOnce, there was opportunity in these hills<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s that wrenchin\u2019 on the hurdy-gurdy<br \/>\nEchoin\u2019 down the alleys of O\u2019Malleys<br \/>\nEvel Knievels, Awful Knofels<br \/>\nPummelin\u2019 in the tunnels<br \/>\nFillin\u2019 the coffers<br \/>\nBastards, bawlers, and brawlers<br \/>\nThe arsonist\u2019s daughter<br \/>\nSold water buckets just down the way<\/p>\n<p>Talkin\u2019 out of school<br \/>\nTellin\u2019 tales from the crypt<br \/>\nStrip by strip by strip<\/p>\n<p>Walkin\u2019 Walkerville,<br \/>\nOnly saw dogs and kids<br \/>\nFront doors<br \/>\nswingin\u2019 in the wind,<br \/>\nCreaking that strange wail,<br \/>\nAnd every goddamn thing\u2019s for sale<\/p>\n<p>Fixed incomes with all the fixins,<br \/>\nCracked linoleum, leaning kitchen<br \/>\nToppling chimney, pile of bricks &#8216;n<br \/>\nAn old Crown Vic, plates from \u201906 &#8216;n<br \/>\nHeard some folks got rich \u2018n<br \/>\nEverybody else left stitchin\u2019<br \/>\nHand-me downs patches on britches<br \/>\nNow village of the listless<\/p>\n<p>Retired dynamite,<br \/>\nRestless elevator shafts<br \/>\nLooming headframes,<br \/>\nProsperity long passed<\/p>\n<p>Who got steel in their toes<br \/>\nWho kept their calluses<br \/>\nWho\u2019s hangin\u2019 around<br \/>\nThis trickle-down town<br \/>\nStill-life, this is still life, stuck in paralysis<\/p>\n<p>If that canary croaked a death knell<br \/>\nlong before prices fell<br \/>\nWhat song would it sing?<br \/>\nRather than drifting<br \/>\nInto cadmium dream<br \/>\nCatching manganese zees<br \/>\nIn the copper light of the morning<\/p>\n<p>Open wounds are hard to ignore<br \/>\nI kept one eye on the pit,<br \/>\nIt\u2019s an easy fix<br \/>\nJust put a catheter on it<br \/>\nPeel off that bandaid real slow<br \/>\nStrip by strip by strip<\/p>\n<p>But hell, we could wind<br \/>\nThis earth in wire<br \/>\nLine by line<br \/>\nElectrify<br \/>\nGive these poor people some light to see by<br \/>\nStrip by strip by strip<br \/>\nChin up, chin up<br \/>\nDrink up, drink up<br \/>\nStrip by strip by strip<\/p>\n<div class=\"well\"><div class=\"dfad dfad_pos_1 dfad_first\" id=\"_ad_652\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/mjhWkW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/201703_capeair_variable.jpg\" alt=\"CapreAir_Variable\" width=\"510\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18069\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Editor&#8217;s note: The seventh annual High Plains Grand Slam, a poetry competition held in conjunction with the High Plains BookFest, played out\u00a0Thursday night before a standing-room-only crowd at the MoAv Coffee House.
