To introduce Last Best News readers to the Bullseye, we can’t think of a better way than to print one of Wilkinson’s most recent columns, which takes an in-depth look at the U.S. House candidacy of Liz Cheney.<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s rather a long piece, but do keep reading until you reach the list of detailed questions that Wilkinson\u2014not really expecting a response, we suppose\u2014poses to Cheney. This is top-notch stuff. Here’s the column:<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"new-west-wilk\"<\/a>Yet another political dynasty is rising in the Cowboy State.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth \u201cLiz\u201d Cheney, lately a resident and self-proclaimed \u201chockey mom\u201d in Wilson, Wyo.\u2014and prior to that, a nearly lifelong denizen of suburban Washington D.C.\u2014is now on a smooth glide path toward achieving something many of her close friends hoped was inevitable: becoming Wyoming\u2019s new lone member of the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

If she wins in November, she will occupy a seat in Congress that once belonged to her father, Dick Cheney\u2014the former vice president to George W. Bush and defense secretary under George H. W. Bush.<\/p>\n

In August, Cheney breezed to victory in a Republican primary field of nine, receiving no serious challenges from other contenders\u2014nor any meaningful journalistic scrutiny by members of the Wyoming media, which have largely treated her with kid gloves, rarely challenging her canned answers and seeming to accept her ascendancy as a fait accompli<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The reasons why the Wyoming media refrains from holding her to account for statements she\u2019s made on national news programs about issues of high global consequence are puzzling.While her misadventures in applying for a Wyoming fishing license<\/a> are somewhat interesting, superficially, it is her outspoken views, parroting those of her father, in support of two controversial wars that resulted in the loss of thousands of U.S. soldiers\u2019 lives and more than a trillion dollars expended, that deserves to arouse still other\u00a0questions. \u00a0And though she describes herself as a \u201cfourth-generation Wyomingite,\u201d how much does she really understand about the West? To some, she seems in a rush to move back into her old house in D.C.<\/p>\n

Cheney\u2019s\u00a0hardliner rhetoric is no different from that of Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann, the former congresswoman from Minnesota. \u00a0Her return to seeking public office\u00a0follows an\u00a0abrupt departure from a failed U.S. Senate bid in 2013 that would have likely brought a bruising loss to incumbent U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, a fellow Republican from Gillette.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0riled voters\u2014and the Republican Party establishment in Wyoming\u2014when she defied protocol and challenged Enzi, invoking Tea Party rhetoric of him not being conservative enough. Along the way she earned the reputation of being a carpetbagger riding the coattails of her father. \u00a0She even attracted the ire of firebrand Ann Coulter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Perceptions have changed only slightly, though there remains widespread suspicion that Cheney will use her House seat as a platform for making another Senate run, or perhaps being asked to serve in a Donald Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Regardless of party affiliation, voters across the state have told me they actually know little about Cheney apart from what she says on Fox News and conservative radio, where she is given star treatment by Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.<\/p>\n

Cheney is a lawyer who, amid charges of nepotism, served in the U.S. State Department when her dad served as vice president. Like her father, she speaks with fiery defiant rhetoric to deflect criticism, delivering attacks on Hillary Clinton as if reading from cue cards.\u00a0 She claims Wyoming\u2019s energy economy has been victimized by a \u201cwar on coal\u201d carried out by the Obama Administration.\u00a0 She says that she, like Trump, is dedicated \u201cto making America safe again\u201d; that there would be far less turmoil in the Middle East if only the Obama Administration had continued the hawkish\u2014some would say \u201cimperialistic”\u2014policies, including the torture of alleged terrorists, condoned by her father.<\/p>\n

But how viable would her candidacy be were it not for her last name?\u00a0What ability and respect\u00a0for comity\u2014courtesy and considerate behavior toward others\u2014does she possess to skillfully work across the aisle when the public respect for Congress is at a historic low caused by partisan gridlock?<\/p>\n

\"CapreAir_Variable\"<\/a><\/div><\/div>Will Cheney be a force for bringing Americans together in the spirit of the Greatest Generation or for driving them apart? Or, will she put\u00a0personal agendas and party ahead of civility and country?<\/p>\n

In January 2010, conservative political commentator Andrew Sullivan\u00a0posed this question in The Atlantic<\/a>: \u201cIf Liz Cheney were not her father\u2019s daughter, why would she be on the Sunday talk shows? Why is she added to ABC News\u2019 roster? What experience does she have in journalism or government? Why is she brought on to spout the kind of extremist, partisan paranoia that alone can make her father\u2019s incompetence and failure to defeat Jihadist terror admirable?\u201d<\/p>\n

Finding the question intriguing, writers for\u00a0The Economist also chimed in<\/a>: \u201cThe problem with Ms. Cheney is not inexperience, but family connections. Her appointment to powerful State Department positions, like her husband Philip Perry\u2019s appointment as general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security, was part of a self-reinforcing habit of nepotism and insularity that plagued George W. Bush\u2019s administration\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Economist<\/em>\u2019s authors added: \u201c[Dick Cheney\u2019s] reliance on such loyal associates ultimately trapped him inside an echo chamber of bad advice on issues such as torture and military intervention abroad. The reason why you shouldn\u2019t appoint your daughter as your surrogate inside the State Department isn\u2019t necessarily that she lacks the relevant experience. It is that your daughter is very likely to give you an inflated sense of your own genius, and that relying for strategic advice on a familial clique is likely to drive you into a blind corner of actions that only look defensible to people who are related to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Liz Cheney herself once told a reporter, \u201cMy sense is, as far as the carpetbagger charge, is it\u2019s from people who don\u2019t want to talk about substance, don\u2019t want to talk about the issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed. \u00a0Here, then, are some\u00a0of many possible questions of substance the Wyoming media should, \u00a0but probably will never, pose to Liz Cheney.<\/p>\n

The New West One-Way Interview With Liz Cheney<\/strong><\/p>\n

TW: You have been labeled a carpetbagger<\/a> by some members of your own party; a candidate who, prior to your relocating to Wilson in order to qualify as a Wyoming resident, probably hadn\u2019t spent more than a couple years, cumulatively, of your adult\u00a0life living in the state.\u00a0 How can one claim to be an expert on \u201cWyoming values\u201d and have an intimate knowledge of working class people in this state when you\u2019ve lived the overwhelming majority\u00a0of your time\u00a0in the D.C. Beltway and today have an address in an elite subdivision in Jackson Hole that many say \u201cisn\u2019t real Wyoming,\u201d and a bubble where so few\u00a0Wyomingites can afford to live?<\/p>\n

LIZ CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Let\u2019s talk about an issue of personal character. You\u2019ve \u00a0been accused by critics of\u00a0throwing your own sister under the bus<\/a>\u00a0when you refused to advocate for same-sex marriage and equal protection under the law. What kind of politician are you if your personal convictions in caring for your own loved ones<\/a> are not consistent\u00a0with your public policy declarations? \u00a0Or, do you view same-sex couples\u00a0as being immoral?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You are your father\u2019s\u00a0greatest defender.\u00a0 Both of you have been vocal critics of President Obama and Hillary Clinton, condemning her foreign policy decisions, in particular blaming her for the deaths of four Americans murdered at the American Embassy in Benghazi, Libya.\u00a0 Clinton bears responsibility, you say, because it happened on her watch while she was serving as Secretary of State. Using the same logic, what do you say about the 3,000 Americans who died in the 9\/11 attacks that occurred while your father was vice president and failed to heed intelligence suggesting\u00a0imminent attacks? If Hillary Clinton\u2019s inaction in not\u00a0preventing the attacks in Benghazi disqualifies her for being president, then shouldn\u2019t the inability of your father\u2019s administration to prevent 9\/11\u2014which killed three thousand more people<\/em> on American soil than the number who died in Benghazi\u2014also be a solid reason to question you and your father\u2019s ability to lead and keep America safe?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You have gone on Fox News many times talking about how Obama has destroyed America and that you want America back. Your father called Obama the worst president of his lifetime. But the largest loss of American lives at home and abroad to enemies of the US; and the greatest near-economic collapse in modern history\u00a0occurred on the watch of your father<\/a>\u00a0and an administration you served in.\u00a0 How is it not being hypocritical for you faulting the current president who inherited a series of colossal messes that started during your own tenure in government?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: This is not a question from me but borrowed from\u00a0Megyn Kelly of Fox News who posed it to your father<\/a>\u00a0while the two of you were out on book tour and after you wrote an op-ed together condemning Obama. Since you didn\u2019t answer Kelly\u2019s question then, please take a stab at it now.\u00a0 She said: \u201cIn your op-ed, you write as follows: \u2018Rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many.\u2019 But time and time again, history has proven that you got it wrong as well in Iraq, sir. You said there was no doubt Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. You said we would be greeted as liberators. You said the Iraq insurgency was in the last throes back in 2005. And you said that after our intervention, extremists would have to \u2018rethink their strategy\u2019 of jihad. Now, with almost a trillion dollars spent there, with 4,500 American lives lost there, what do you say to those who say you were so wrong about so much at the expense of so many?\u201d<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: One more follow-up question about the US invasion of Iraq and Afghantistan. \u00a0It is estimated that thousands upon thousands of\u00a0civilian noncombatants<\/a>, which, of course, means that lots of\u00a0innocent children were killed,\u00a0maimed or orphaned and families destroyed by our actions. Do you think that that kind of \u201ccollateral damage\u201d might be responsible for the ongoing level of hostility toward Americans by people living in the region? And do you, as an ardent military interventionist, really believe America can and should assert its will upon the rest of the world, at a cost of American lives and resources that would better serve our country at home?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Your father left office with a 13 percent public approval rating<\/a>, which may be the lowest of any vice president in US history. \u00a0And The New York Times<\/em>, in an editorial, said that your father and associates ought to be investigated for war crimes<\/a> based upon evidence that came to light in a US Senate report. Why do you think the American public had such a low assessment of your father\u2019s performance? \u00a0Given that your\u00a0\u00a0policy positions are identical to your father\u2019s, how do yours better reflect the values of Americans?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You have portrayed the research surrounding climate change as\u00a0based on \u201cjunk science\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and yet experts from\u00a0the National Academy of Sciences\u00a0<\/a>(the most respected scientific body in the world) as well as leaders in the U.S. military<\/a> have said human-caused\u00a0climate change is real<\/a> and that it\u00a0is a threat to human health, the environment, the economy of our country and our national security. In fact, climate change is expected to have\u00a0disastrous consequences for Wyoming in the form of low snowpacks and water shortages, severe impacts to agriculture, wildfires (that cannot be stopped by logging forests), and downsides for the state tourism economy. \u00a0Who are your scientific sources? And what special insight do you possess about climate change that is superior to those of prominent globally-respected scientists and US military leaders<\/a>?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You and fellow Neocon Bill Kristol, with whom you co-founded \u201cKeep America Safe,\u201d opposed the new START nuclear treaty with Russia. Yet a distinguished group of experts, including prominent Cold War\u00a0Republican statesmen like George Shultz<\/a>,\u00a0who served under Ronald Reagan, and Henry Kissinger, and 15 other former secretaries of State, Defense and Energy, serving Republican and Democrat presidents, said re-ratifying START was important to reduce the nuclear threat. Again, as with the questions about climate change, what special insight do you possess that is greater than that of more than a dozen experts with military\/diplomatic experience dealing with the Russians and former Soviet Union?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Salon magazine recently wrote<\/a>, \u201cAs a candidate for Congress, Cheney promotes her involvement with the Alliance as one of her achievements. Her\u00a0campaign website<\/a>\u00a0boasts that \u2018she is the co-founder of the Alliance for a Strong America<\/a>, a non-profit organization based in Wyoming, and focused on educating voters about the importance of American leadership and strength.’\u201d Critics say the Alliance for a Strong America doesn\u2019t appear to do anything at all. Please explain the mission and accomplishments of the Alliance for a Strong America.<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You and your father have been outspoken in your criticism of the Obama Administration\u2019s nuclear deal with Iran yet when you were serving in the State Department\u00a0the US had little success<\/a> in halting Iran\u2019s nuclear program. \u00a0You\u2019ve also condemned the Obama Administration for the disaster that has occurred in Syria. \u00a0You were head of the State Department\u2019s Iran Syria Policy and Operations Group<\/a> whose goal was to promote regime change. That didn\u2019t happen. You were in a position to effect change in the region and experts say you failed.<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: You and your father continuously claim that America has lost respect and standing in the world during the Obama presidency, an assertion that appears to be challenged by facts. Here\u2019s a little tidbit<\/a> on Obama and Clinton. Peter Beinart also wrote this in The Atlantic<\/a>: \u00a0\u201cFor more than a decade, the Pew Research Center has been asking people around the world about their opinion of the United States. The upshot: In every region of the globe except the Middle East (where the United States was wildly unpopular under George W. Bush and remains so), America\u2019s favorability is way up since Obama took office<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Decades\u2019 worth of his own words and rigorous fact-checking<\/a> shows Donald Trump to be a chronic opportunistic liar<\/a>, chauvinist, racist and bully, that he appears to suffer from\u00a0dishonesty<\/a> and stunted emotional maturity, and that he has no real knowledge of foreign affairs. Historians such as Ken Burns<\/a>\u00a0and leaders in the military say he is utterly unfit to be commander in chief, especially with authority over our nuclear arsenal. Both Ted Cruz (who did, ironically, endorse Trump on 9\/23\/2016<\/a>) and Mitt Romney, whose candidacies you supported, back that negative view of Trump. And\u00a0so does Richard Armitage<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Brent Scowcroft who served alongside your father<\/a>\u00a0under Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush \u00a0 Yet you have thrown your support behind Trump, a man who has praised the leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin. \u00a0Do you really see Trump as behaving presidentially?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Here\u2019s what Trump said in a short video about your father<\/a> and his book, calling him angry, nasty and a liar \u201cwho did a rotten job as vice president and nobody liked him.\u201d Are you still impressed with Trump?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Many in Wyoming three years ago saw it as bad form for you, even accusing you of being arrogant and mercenary,\u00a0to come out of nowhere and challenge incumbent Senator Mike Enzi<\/a>.\u00a0 Enzi had worked his way up by serving local Wyoming communities and holding elected public office\u2014something you had never done. Later, you withdrew from the race citing personal family reasons after polls showed you would likely get trounced.\u00a0 Do you think it was bad form to have challenged Enzi and do you still stand behind the disparaging things you said about him during your Senate campaign?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Part of your campaign stump speech is saying the Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency is waging a war on coal.\u00a0 In fact, Wyoming benefited mightily from regulations that opened markets for its low sulfur coal at the expense of coal from Appalachia yet no politicians here complained when thousands of coal workers in the East were put out of work due to those regulations.\u00a0 Health experts today note regulations to reduce pollution emissions at power plants already are saving human lives and cutting the incidence of asthma in kids.\u00a0For every $1 invested, the American public will realize $7 in health benefits<\/a>. Energy economists say it\u2019s been the glut of cheap natural gas<\/a>\u00a0that has negatively impacted Wyoming\u2019s coal industry as much as environmental regulation.\u00a0And they say Wyoming has been slow to embrace emerging technology; that the state would have been far better positioned to weather the shift away from coal just as tobacco-growing states reckoned with society\u2019s awakening about\u00a0the deadly consequences of smoking cigarettes. Why do you continue to push the \u201cwar on coal\u201d narrative when you know it\u2019s a huge exaggeration of the truth?<\/p>\n

CHENEY:<\/strong><\/p>\n

TW: You claim Obamacare has been disastrous; meanwhile, Republicans have advanced no tangible plan to deal with millions of American families who are uninsured and whose lives have been destroyed by illness. The Wyoming legislature\u00a0has refused to accept $300 million<\/a>\u00a0from the federal government that could have been put toward establishing health plans for the uninsured. Most notably, it could have helped hundreds of coal mining families that now are losing their health care benefits. \u00a0My question: Do you see health care as a fundamental human right and does society have an obligation to assist people in desperate need?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Do you support\u00a0the radical push<\/a>\u00a0by U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop of Utah\u2014deemed illegal by legal scholars and which, by a huge margin is opposed by hunters, anglers, recreationists and general citizens\u2014to have\u00a0federal public lands ceded\u00a0to state ownership<\/a>?\u00a0 And, if the states cannot afford to steward those lands, do you favor, as radical Sagebrush Rebels do, that they be sold off and privatized?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were aligned with the GOP and they were progressives. Do you think the GOP still deserves to call itself the party of Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt?\u00a0 If yes, how\u2014and please provide examples?\u00a0 If not, then why?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State who served President Bush with your father and you\u00a0had some unflattering things<\/a>\u00a0to say about the two of you. \u00a0The Four-Star General\u00a0also felt burned earlier by the negative things your father said about him in his book. \u00a0How do you respond?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW: In one of the few instances you\u2019ve publicly disagreed with your father,\u00a0you defended the candidacy of Sarah Palin<\/a>\u00a0as vice president and said she would be an excellent leader. \u00a0Your father said John McCain\u2019s selection of her as a running mate was a mistake. Did you, do you,\u00a0really find Palin<\/a> to be a seriously intelligent person <\/a>capable of holding the second most powerful position in US government?<\/p>\n

CHENEY:<\/strong><\/p>\n

TW:\u00a0 Shortly after you were on the air with Rush Limbaugh this summer, you tweeted this message: \u201cHillary Clinton is a crooked and corrupt felon<\/a>\u00a0who is being protected by an unethical Attorney General and President.\u201d\u00a0 Clinton has never been convicted of a felony and you would know as an attorney that making such an accusation is libelous yet you persist. Apart from that, how would you define the term \u201cstatesmanship\u201d and do you believe that you are deserving to be called a statesman working for the good of all<\/em> Americans?<\/p>\n

CHENEY<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

TW:\u00a0 You have five children who are hearing your words and watching your actions on the public stage. Are you setting a solid example of decency, worthy of emulation, for how to build a better and more civil country, state and society, or does that not matter?<\/p>\n
