Donald Trump declaims to Americans everywhere.<\/p><\/div>\n

Scholars, political strategists and us media elites with our chauffeured limousines and steak dinners<\/a> have been struggling to understand the broad appeal of Donald Trump, a man whose contributions to society include possibly paying federal income tax.<\/p>\n

Is it his fourth-grade speaking level<\/a>? Is it his brilliant use of repetition<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n

But in poring over the transcript<\/a> of Monday\u2019s debate with Hillary Clinton, it struck us that what we have found in Trump is a Homer for the modern age. Yes, he is the Platonic ideal of the philosopher king, but more than that, he captures the essence–sometimes plaintive, sometimes grandiloquent–of the American spirit. Other politicians sputter in prose; Trump orates in pure poetry.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s mastery of the free verse form suggests that the presidency may be too low a station for his aspirations. We therefore present, in his own words (we added the titles) America\u2019s new Poet-in-Chief:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Leaving Detroit<\/strong><\/p>\n

I watched the way you talk now<\/p>\n

about how lovely everything is<\/p>\n

and how wonderful you are.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t work that way.<\/p>\n

Losing Control<\/strong><\/p>\n

Whether that was Russia,<\/p>\n

Whether that was China,<\/p>\n

Whether it was another country,<\/p>\n

We don’t know.<\/p>\n

Because the truth is,<\/p>\n

Under President Obama<\/p>\n

We’ve lost control of things<\/p>\n

That we used to have control over.<\/p>\n

Good with Computers<\/strong><\/p>\n

She doesn’t have the look.<\/p>\n

And I don’t believe she does have the stamina.<\/p>\n

To be president of this country,<\/p>\n

You need tremendous stamina.<\/p>\n
