Four people were hospitalized, \u201cthree of whom were transported by helicopter ambulance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four of the incidents happened when groups of three or more people approached the bison, and three took place while visitors were taking photos within six feet of bison, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>During two of those three photo-related injuries, people had their backs turned to the animals, and one person reported \u201ctaking a cell phone self-portrait (selfie), which necessitated getting close to the animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"well\"><div class=\"dfad dfad_pos_1 dfad_first\" id=\"_ad_652\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/mjhWkW\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/201703_capeair_variable.jpg\" alt=\"CapreAir_Variable\" width=\"510\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18069\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>Yellowstone is home to almost 5,000 bison, and they are found across much of the park. Adult bulls can weigh 2,000 pounds and run faster than an Olympic sprinter.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F7VghMbLiMA\" target=\"_blank\">Bison can be unpredictable and dangerous, particularly when spooked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The National Park Service has for many years distributed fliers and other materials to visitors entering the park, warning of the dangers of thermal features and wildlife, particularly bison, which are responsible for more human injuries since 1980 than any other animal in Yellowstone.<\/p>\n<p>Park regulations require staying 300 feet from bears and wolves and 75 feet from other wildlife. But many visitors, including an increasing number of first-time and foreign tourists, are either unaware of park rules or choose to ignore them.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11168\"  class=\"wp-caption module image alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"addboard wp-image-11168 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/lastbestnews.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bison-on-Youtube.jpg\" alt=\"Bison2\" width=\"336\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Aug. 4, 2012, video posted to YouTube illustrates the importance of keeping a safe distance from wildlife in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The report noted that from 1980 to 1999, about 30 percent of bison-related injuries involved photography, and most of those injured were more than 10 feet away just before the incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart phones now meet the needs of most casual photographers,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe popularity of smart phone photography with its limited zoom capacity and social media sharing of selfies might explain why visitors disregard park regulations and approach wildlife more closely than when traditional camera technology was used,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>A record 4 million people visited the park last year, and this summer is also expected to be busy as the National Park Service celebrates its centennial. Yellowstone officials have said they are exploring ways to better educate tourists about safety issues, including close encounters with wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInjury prevention campaigns that identify and target the underlying motivations of visitors to not comply with viewing distances might prevent future injuries,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n<p><em>Contact Ruffin Prevost at 307-213-9818 or ruffin@yellowstonegate.com.
