A handful of conservation groups and Montana landowners are protesting several oil and gas leases offered by the Bureau of Land Management along the banks of the Yellowstone River. Opponents said the leases aren’t suitable for the area, which relies on revenue generated by tourism and outdoor recreation. (more…) Continue Reading →

Rocky students lead the way in Montana turtle study
|
Six years ago, during a walk along the Yellowstone River, I caught a glimpse of something I had never seen before. It was obviously a turtle, but with a shell unlike any I had ever seen before — a shell that looked like a pancake. One second this beautiful creature was there, sunning itself on a muddy beach, and then the next all I saw were ripples where it slid into the water to escape me. I found out later it was a spiny softshell turtle – a shy, elusive reptile that is found in the river systems of southeast Montana and about which wildlife biologists know little. Prairie Lights: No bad days on Montana rivers
|
I don’t imagine that my obituary will say I was an avid outdoorsman. I’m more of a midsize-city slicker who occasionally ventures into the nearer reaches of the wilds for a day or three. This weekend is supposed to be one of those occasions. By the time people are reading this I should be on a Montana river somewhere, on a short hike just off the river or passing tall tales and a flask around a campfire. (more…) Continue Reading →

A few words of praise for the silver sage

There is a tall, ancient, sagebrush beside a mailbox along a road to the Yellowstone River—a remnant of the open prairie of long ago. A wild-looking piece of creation, it is not content to hide in the roadside debris of beer cans, accumulated drifts of dirt and dust, and the many kinds of exotic weeds. (more…) Continue Reading →

New director has long history with state Audubon center

In marketing itself to the outside world, Carolyn Sevier said, Billings is “closely wedded to landscape—the Rims, the river, the mountains, the prairies.”
She hopes that the Montana Audubon Center, which she was named to lead effective Jan. 1, will become widely known as the premier entity for helping connect people in this region with their natural surroundings. (more…) Continue Reading →

Snow, cold lure desk-bound drone to go exploring
|
Tuesday afternoon, I almost felt guilty, staying inside as much as I had over the past few days. I thought how terribly I’d miss the cold and the snow when the Chinooks returned, as they always do. So I went out looking for lasting images of winter, as reminders of what we had when we don’t have it anymore. (more…) Continue Reading →

The Yellowstone River: much to hear for those who listen
|
The Yellowstone River speaks to those who listen, but most people don’t hear her whispers. It’s an old adage that in order to experience miracles, one has to be open to them. Her voice is such a phenomenon—quiet, elegant, pervasive, primal and spiritual. (more…) Continue Reading →

Prairie Lights: A few more details for Outside readers

The profile of Billings written for Outside magazine, hailing this burg as the winner of the magazine’s Best Towns 2016 contest, covered a lot of ground in a short space. The writer talked to some good people, hit many of the highlights and did a good job of telling Outside readers that Billings was a bit different from past Best Towns winners. Yellowstone Park weighing options in light of fish kill

CODY, WYO. — Park authorities have no plans so far to close waters in Yellowstone National Park to anglers and others following a move Friday by Montana wildlife officials to close a vast stretch of the Yellowstone River. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks announced the immediate and indefinite closure of more than 150 miles of the Yellowstone River and its tributaries to fishing, boating and all other recreational activities. On what was almost a perfect summer day, a young dog lover by the name of Pari Kemmick went with some friends up to the Four Dances Natural Area early in the evening on Monday. They walked to the edge of the high sandstone formations there (often referred to as Sacrifice Cliff), then made their way down to the Yellowstone River bottom via a steep, narrow road.
