Over many years, Grant Kier has worked with farmers and ranchers, conservationists and roughnecks. He has helped find middle ground between often opposing groups and closed deals worth millions of dollars. On Tuesday, the former well-site geologist and director of Five Valleys Land Trust entered Montana’s race for Congress, looking to win the seat currently occupied by freshman Rep. Greg Gianforte. Prairie Lights: When ‘taking responsibility’ is not enough

If Congressman-elect Greg Gianforte appears in Justice Court in Bozeman this week to enter a plea on a charge of misdemeanor assault, he won’t be able to say anything deliberately untrue without putting himself at risk of being charged with perjury. So, is there nothing we can do about the deliberate untruth his campaign released in the immediate aftermath of Gianforte’s attack on a newspaper reporter? (more…) Continue Reading →

Dates set for 2 House candidate Facebook town halls
|
Forward Montana is still waiting to hear from Greg Gianforte, but the other two candidates for the state’s sole U.S. House seat have scheduled Facebook Live town halls. As we reported earlier this month, Forward Montana has teamed up with Last Best News and the Missoula Independent to sponsor the town halls. Democratic candidate Rob Quist and Libertarian candidate Mark Wicks will be featured in hour-long town halls moderated by Alex Sakariassen of the Missoula Independent, who will be asking questions submitted by readers. Some questions have been submitted already, but we could use some more, so please go to https://goo.gl/forms/Y3CN9ZJXPVhf66zm1 and submit yours. Forward Montana, a youth-advocacy group whose slogan is “Not right, not left, but forward,” has not yet been able to schedule a town hall with Gianforte, the Republican candidate for the House seat vacated by Ryan Zinke when he became secretary of the Interior. Prairie Lights: Quist dragged into unwinnable arms race

That ain’t no banjo, pilgrim. I was rooting for Rob Quist, I really was. And not just rooting. I was also praying. I’d get up in the morning, drop to my knees and I’d say, “Please, God, don’t let Rob Quist, in this truncated special-election season, give in to the temptation to shoot a gun in a television commercial.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Libertarian House candidate sits down with Montana Mint

Editor’s note: This is reprinted with permission from Montana Mint, a website whose stated mission is to “Bring the best of Montana to the internet.”
Mark Wicks, an Inverness cattle rancher and author, is the Libertarian Party candidate running for Montana’s open Congressional seat. He sat down with the Montana Mint on Friday to talk about his campaign, why Democrats and Republicans should vote third party, and his book “The Wrath of the Dodo.” Unlike his fellow candidates, Wicks campaigns without a staff, without full-time volunteers, and with little to no financial assistance from party he represents.
