U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., really hates online sales taxes. I mean really. His April news release opposing a federal law on internet sales reinforced a similar news release in February. “Montana doesn’t have a sales tax for a reason,” Tester said in the release. “This law would supersede the rights of our state and the will of our people by forcing Montana’s small businesses to collect a tax we don’t support to benefit states we don’t live in.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Opinion: As Gianforte shows, money can’t buy everything
|
There was a recent French movie called “Marguerite,” about a wealthy aristocrat who decided to become an opera singer, based on a true story. Marguerite Dumont hired the best music teacher money could buy and set to work to achieve her goal, but unfortunately, she had no natural singing ability whatsoever. She was tone deaf, and nobody around her could convince her otherwise. (more…) Continue Reading →

Rally-goers protest Daines, promote renewable energy
|
On an unappetizing day to make a case for solar power, about 30 environmentalists huddled in rain and snow Tuesday to urge U.S. Sen. Steve Daines to pay more attention to renewable energy sources. The rally on a bleak afternoon at the Yellowstone County Courthouse preceded Daines’ Montana Energy Conference, which got underway with continuing education sessions on Tuesday at the Radisson Convention Center. The conference continues through Thursday. (more…) Continue Reading →

David Crisp: What matters, what doesn’t, in recent flaps

In April 1864, months before one of the most contentious elections in American history, the New York World accused President Abraham Lincoln of having urged a friend to sing a comic song as they strolled among the dead and wounded two years earlier at Antietam. The World pounded on the false story for five months, eventually adding the fanciful detail that Democratic opponent George McClellan, the general Lincoln had fired for timidity and a fatal case of the “slows,” had pleaded in vain for Lincoln to show respect to the fallen. Opinion: ‘War on coal’? How about ‘Give peace a chance’
|
U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., came to Baker, where I live, to talk about, as he put it, a “war on coal.” His visit was part of an energy tour leading up to an Energy Expo in Billings, which he organized on behalf of the fossil fuel industries. As the days have passed, and I have thought about what was implicit in what he said, I find myself increasingly disturbed by how he and other politicians, like Ryan Zinke, Tim Fox, Greg Gianforte and Donald Trump are framing environmentalists. David Crisp: Journalists not doing jobs in presidential race
|
At no other time in recent memory have the media been so relentlessly pummeled in a presidential election. So let’s pile on. Why? Because if you have diligently followed the presidential campaigns on television, then you have seen hundreds of hours of coverage of candidate after candidate. And, chances are, you still know very little about their actual positions on issues. Continue Reading →

Former oil exec urges united action on climate change
|
A self-described Republican and former climate change skeptic says Americans must now take the fight against global warming as seriously as they did World War II. “We, united, can do it,” she said Wednesday. “But we have to get united, and we have to realize that this is a war footing.” (more…) Continue Reading →

David Crisp: To win the war, let’s not lose our nerve

I was delivering the Outpost and listening to Sean Hannity, between commercials for mail-order razors and Hoodie-Footies, responding to terror by spreading terror. The president was weak, feckless and driven by ideological rigidity, Hannity was saying. Homeland Security was bedeviled, the military hamstrung, the FBI over its head, the borders bulging with potential terrorists. (more…) Continue Reading →

David Crisp: Warning—This column contains alleged facts

An alert reader sent along a message he got from U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont. “I just thought this might need an editorial reply,” the reader wrote. Agreed. In the message, Daines happily reported that the Senate had just voted to repeal Obamacare. Not until the eighth paragraph did he mention that President Obama still has to sign the bill, which nobody expects to happen. Continue Reading →

Israeli flag in Crow Tribe’s veterans park stirs contention
|
When Crow elected officials raised a new flag at the Apsaalooke Veterans Park last week, it immediately raised eyebrows—and the ire—of some tribal members. Flying alongside flags representing the state of Montana, the Crow Nation, the United States and the U.S. military was the Israeli “Star of David” flag. (more…) Continue Reading →
