Lay of the Land: A series of essays on the spirit of Montana
On Oct. 23, acclaimed American Indian author Sherman Alexie came to a packed Rocky Mountain College Fortin Center gymnasium and gave what was reported to be a hilariously entertaining speech that had the crowd laughing until their stomachs hurt. I had written several in-depth articles about the controversy his young-adult book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” had caused in School District 2 last year at this time. Former Billings athlete shatters beer-mile record

Kimbrough

Chris Kimbrough, formerly a star athlete at Billings Senior High and Rocky Mountain College, has done us proud. Last week, she set a new women’s beer-mile world record with a time of 6:28.6 in her first attempt at the event. That means she ran four laps around a track, having drunk a beer before each lap. She shaved 13 seconds off the old record. Did we mention that she is 44 years old and has six children? Continue Reading →

Alexie delivers rollicking, raucous speech at Rocky

Alexie

It’s a safe bet that the Skyview High parent who did not want her child to read Sherman Alexie’s “Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” would not have wanted her child to attend Alexie’s speech in Billings Thursday night. The wildly popular author delivered a 65-minute talk and then spent 48 minutes answering, more or less, just three questions from the audience in the gymnasium of Rocky Mountain College’s Fortin Education Center. Headstone

This story has been updated, in a postscript. The power of social media was on display in Billings Monday, when users of a Facebook page quickly solved the mystery surrounding a tombstone found in the Yellowstone River. The granite headstone was found Saturday during the eighth annual Yellowstone River Cleanup. A group of Rocky Mountain College students found the headstone near Duck Creek Bridge, on dry cobblestone near the water’s edge, and hauled it by boat to Norm’s Island, a few miles downstream. Rocky aviation students bone up on drones

Two small helicopter-like Unmanned Aerial Systems could be seen earlier this week flying in and outside of Rocky Mountain College’s aviation building. It was part of a demonstration by professor Scott Wilson and two of his students, who showed how to operate the machines and discussed the complex regulatory environment surrounding them. From the Outpost: Gianforte’s speech imagined

David Crisp

Bozeman entrepreneur Greg Gianforte has been invited to speak at commencement exercises at Montana Tech in Butte and at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Some people have threatened to boycott the ceremonies because of his involvement with groups that oppose equal rights for gays and lesbians and that support creationism. I think the protesters have it all wrong. Gianforte is the perfect person to speak to budding young graduates. Here is what he should say: (more…) Continue Reading →

Faith, reason and dinosaurs

Kemmick

Ten years ago, before he opened his faith-based creationist dinosaur museum, I went over to Glendive to interview Otis Kline. I had thought it might be fun to hear Kline present his notions regarding evolution, the age of the Earth and what we could learn from dinosaur fossils. (more…) Continue Reading →
