Weighing in at about 250 pounds and dressed in leopard print leggings and an oversized sweatshirt, Rhonda was the epitome of inspiration. I met her at a support group for survivors of sexual assault when I was 18 years old. All Rhonda wanted was an apartment of her own and a lot of cats. At that time, Rhonda was in her late 40s. Rhonda’s brother and father molested her until, in her early teens, she finally fled home. Continue Reading →

RED LODGE—When George Washington led troops into battle during the Revolutionary War, he communicated with his men at the same speed Julius Caesar had sent dispatches 2,000 years earlier. But within 100 years after the Revolutionary War, communications had developed rapidly with the invention of the railroad, telegraph, telephone and steamship. A hundred years after that, the Internet was in its infancy, heralding a new era in which global communications could occur almost instantly—and posing new risks to privacy and national security. A perfect day for the long loop home from Red Lodge

At a community meeting called by Mayor Ed Williams, they were told that the Montana Department of Transportation, responding to complaints over how sidewalks were rebuilt, would like all “obstructions” removed from downtown sidewalks. For Joliet sculptor Charles Ringer, ‘my lifestyle is my art’
|
A lot of people are familiar with the work of Charlie Ringer, a metal sculptor who has lived in Joliet for almost 45 years. He figures he’s created more than 5,000 works of art, some of which are in galleries, corporate collections and museums across the country. Countless thousands of people have toured his gallery in Joliet or driven past his property just east of the gallery, fronted by large, whimsical metal sculptures like “The Creature,” dubbed “The Snow God” by skiers and snowboarders on their way to Red Lodge Mountain. The real deal: Kosel brothers play country from the heart
|
RED LODGE—A little before the High Country Cowboys took to the stage Friday night at the Pollard Hotel, lead singer Marty Kosel was talking about the kind of show they put on. “It’s like sing a song and sing another song,” he said. “Not a lot in between.”
Sure enough, in the course of a show that ran for four hours, Marty and his brothers, John and Joe, addressed the crowd only rarely and briefly between songs. But their audience—which filled every available seat, leaving a dozen or more people standing—didn’t seem to mind. (more…) Continue Reading →
