Montana colleges rank near middle of pack

Montana colleges and universities posted mediocre results in Washington Monthly’s annual rankings, which came out Monday. The University of Montana ranked 115th nationally in the overall rankings. It was the only Montana school to make the list, which included more than 300 colleges and universities. In the “Best Bang for the Bucks” listing of colleges in the West, only the University of Montana Western campus in Dillion cracked the top 40. Montana Tech in Butte was listed 49th. Prairie Lights: Millions later, the ‘meth epidemic’ is back

If you’ve been following the news in Montana at all recently, you know that methamphetamine use is once again a terrible problem. Just last month, the Billings Gazette ran a story with a headline that said, “Meth possession spikes while other crimes stay steady.” The story quoted Police Chief Rich St. John, who said this about the near-record number of murders: “There’s a common denominator, and it’s usually methamphetamine.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Starting a week from today and continuing every Monday for 32 weeks, Last Best News will be running a series of video presentations by state leaders in business, politics and academics. The Montana Ethic Project was created by a group of students at Montana State University and the University of Montana. They wanted some of the brightest, most inspiring people in Montana to speak directly to other residents of this state about subjects important to themselves and to the larger society. Doig’s archives coming home to Montana

Montana State University officials announced Wednesday that the papers of novelist Ivan Doig will return to the state. The beloved novelist’s archives will be housed at the MSU Library and be made available for public examination as well as being incorporated into the research and scholarly activities at the school.
