I never attended McKinley Elementary School, but I learned plenty there. I learned that a good school becomes not just the center of children’s lives, but of their parents’ lives, too. Billings native Kim Barker learned to fish and backpack in Montana, but she learned to sing karaoke, interview warlords, shoot Kalashnikovs and jump-start a car using a metal ladder in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Dan retired from the Billings Gazette last year after a career of more than 25 years there. He and his wife, Kay, moved to Billings in 1979 and Dan joined the Gazette as an ad salesman in 1985.
