If you are in the habit of watching cable news or the History channel, you probably have seen the ads: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the ads say, wastes money on lavish buildings and salaries, operates in a “plantation” atmosphere and is accountable to no one. (more…) Continue Reading →

Marketplace Fairness crosses partisan lines

U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., really hates online sales taxes. I mean really. His April news release opposing a federal law on internet sales reinforced a similar news release in February. “Montana doesn’t have a sales tax for a reason,” Tester said in the release. “This law would supersede the rights of our state and the will of our people by forcing Montana’s small businesses to collect a tax we don’t support to benefit states we don’t live in.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Politico predicts that Donald Trump should easily win Montana this fall, and quotes Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., as saying that he hopes to be able to work with Trump if that happens. “He’s got some pretty goofy opinions, but hopefully we’ve got some stuff we can work on,” Tester said. BOZEMAN — Brian Leland didn’t care that he had to wake up around 2 a.m. Friday in order to watch a live broadcast of National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” at Feed Café. For entrepreneurs looking for capital, Montana can be a tough place to do business. Bankers, by their own account, can be “very stingy.” Montana attracts only a tiny fraction of the venture capital that goes to nearby states. And people who can’t qualify for conventional lending often can’t get federally backed loans either. For Indians, the odds are even longer. Much of the land on reservations is held in trust, and home ownership rates are low, making it hard to find the collateral to secure a loan. Continue Reading →

Bettendorf.com is reporting that Lee has sold a newspaper building in Napa, Calif., for $5 million, which it planned to use to pay down part of its enormous debt. (more…) Continue Reading →
