In May, on the eve of Greg Gianforte’s special congressional election, the Montana politician “body-slammed” inquiring news reporter Ben Jacobs and began “punching” him, according to Jacobs and other witnesses. (more…) Continue Reading →

Moss says she will seek U.S House seat

Lynda Moss, a former Democratic state senator from Billings, announced on Wednesday that she plans to be a candidate for Montana’s only congressional seat. In a press release, Moss said she will officially announce her candidacy this Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Toucan Gallery, 2505 Montana Ave. (more…) Continue Reading →

Note to politicians: Keep the money

It isn’t the function of government to take money from bad people and give it to good people, but if that’s how things happen to turn out, why complain? Yet some Americans do. (more…) Continue Reading →

For Daines, ideology trumps evidence
|
U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., has a history of making dubious claims. Perhaps none was more dubious than his response to the Las Vegas massacre: “History shows us that more gun laws do not make our society safer.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Daines, Gianforte tout tech growth at Missoula summit
|
Back in the 1970s, when Steve Daines was on a family trip to Disneyland, a woman asked him about life back home. Her impression of Montana was stereotypical at best — a third-world state far removed from economic prosperity. Kicking off the Montana High Tech Jobs Summit on Monday, Daines, now a U.S. senator representing the state, said times have changed. Technology has removed the barriers of geography, and Montana’s booming tech sector competes at the enterprise level with the world’s top firms. (more…) Continue Reading →

Opinion: Gianforte and his PR team must do better
|
After 18 years as a journalist working across Montana and Wyoming, there aren’t too many times where I can say that something happened for the first time. Sometimes it feels like I’ve seen or heard it all before. But a new first came on Tuesday, when I got word that U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., was in Missoula. A trusted reader said she had spotted him at lunch at Finn and Porter, a local restaurant, right around noon. (more…) Continue Reading →

Former land trust director running for U.S. House seat
|
Over many years, Grant Kier has worked with farmers and ranchers, conservationists and roughnecks. He has helped find middle ground between often opposing groups and closed deals worth millions of dollars. On Tuesday, the former well-site geologist and director of Five Valleys Land Trust entered Montana’s race for Congress, looking to win the seat currently occupied by freshman Rep. Greg Gianforte. Billings attorney and restaurant owner John Heenan has also entered the race as a Democrat. (more…) Continue Reading →

Opinion: The national debt ceiling crisis, again
|
I wonder if Montana’s congressional delegation knows the difference between spending money and paying bills. Once again – for the second time in a decade – Congress flirts with defaulting on the nation’s debt by failing to raise the federal debt ceiling. Granted, the can was kicked three months down the road when, last week, it was attached to the Harvey hurricane relief package. Don’t rest easy, though; some legislators still want you to believe that defaulting on the debt will reduce government spending. (more…) Continue Reading →

Freshly arrived writer overwhelmed by Montana crime news
|
A recently arrived resident of Missoula has noticed a curious thing: that exposure to Montana’s daily newspapers makes one keenly, alarmingly aware of local crime. Anne Helen Petersen, the author of these musings, is a bit more than a casual observer. She is a native of Idaho who covers the West for Buzzfeed, who wrote one of the best, most thoughtful pieces on the special election that resulted in Greg Gianforte’s ascension to the House of Representatives. (more…) Continue Reading →

Billings lawyer John Heenan hopes to challenge Rep. Gianforte
|
Billings lawyer John Heenan has announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., in the 2018 election. Heenan, 40, is the first Democrat to file as a candidate for Montana’s only House seat. Heenan, who registered his campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday, said he began thinking of running against Gianforte “after the special election and Gianforte’s assault on the reporter.” (more…) Continue Reading →
