GLACIER NATIONAL PARK – Brian Paul opened the door of his 20,000-pound rotary snowplow Thursday morning, stepped out of the rig and climbed down to dry pavement. The cab has been his office for just over two months as he’s chipped away at the 60-foot drifts and snowbanks covering Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. (more…) Continue Reading →

600 inches of snow later, Sperry Chalet doing well
|
Sperry Chalet is filling with snow, but its talus-stone skeleton remains intact, an overflight of the historic Glacier National Park dormitory showed last week. Photographs taken from a helicopter revealed a noticeably deeper accumulation of snow inside the burned-out lodge than did similar photos taken during a February flight. Other buildings at the site, which were not burned, appeared to be nearly buried in the snow. (more…) Continue Reading →

Tester: Use Capitol Christmas tree to help rebuild chalet
|
The Yaak-grown Englemann spruce that did duty as the Capitol Christmas tree in December could be headed back to Montana for use in the rebuilding of Sperry Chalet. U.S. Sen. Jon Tester on Monday asked the Architect of the Capitol – whose domain includes the Capitol’s West Lawn and its Christmas tree – for permission to bring the 79-foot-tall tree back to Montana. Volunteers aid in search for elusive Black Swift
|
Since the summer of 2013, Montana Audubon has engaged citizen scientists in searching for one of Montana’s least understood species, the Black Swift. When we started these efforts, just seven nest sites were known in the state, and it was clear the bird remained among the Species of Greatest Inventory Need. Nesting amongst rocky niches, and under hidden waterfalls, the colonial-breeding Black Swift remains challenging to locate, even to a trained observer’s eye. (more…) Continue Reading →

Workers rush to save Glacier chalet before winter comes
|
In a race against winter they’re determined not to lose, 10 workers are camped in Glacier National Park’s backcountry, rushing to stabilize the burned-out shell of Sperry Chalet before it is buried beneath the snow. The work is privately funded through donations to the Glacier National Park Conservancy’s Sperry Action Fund, created the day after a wildfire overran the 103-year-old chalet on Aug. 31. Notes on an otherworldly outing to smoky Glacier Park

The two hikers had the campground to themselves up until evening, their sack of food strung high in the air and their tents set in the woods. They had come all the way from Texas carrying food for four days and a dream based on images they’d found on the Internet. (more…) Continue Reading →

Wildfire claims historic chalet in Glacier Park

Glacier National Park’s historic and much-loved Sperry Chalet was destroyed late Thursday when high winds pushed the Sprague fire to the east and it overtook the building, despite firefighters’ best efforts. The main building was lost at about 6 p.m., according to Glacier Park officials, who made the announcement via Facebook. (more…) Continue Reading →

A lucky man: Reaping the benefits of a forced slowdown

I had total hip replacement surgery in the middle of May, and I figured that if I was anything like my coworker, I’d be back to normal in three weeks, four weeks max. My coworker, who had the same surgery, is 20 years younger and a Special Forces vet. He returned to work a week after his hip replacement, but he later told me that he had made a mistake in coming back so soon and almost passed out numerous times his first week back. In Montana, leading the charge in rethinking ‘vacation’
|
The Onion, the spoof online news outlet, recently ran a hilarious headline that read: “Health Experts Recommend Standing Up At Desk, Leaving Office, Never Coming Back”
The reason it’s funny is that it includes a dark strain of truth. Nearly 60 percent of workers consider themselves “disengaged” from their jobs. In fact, I bet many of you might be reading this at a desk where you wish you were doing something else. (more…) Continue Reading →
