By weekly newspaper standards, things slow down here a bit in the summer, so I thought I would take a few minutes to solve a pressing national concern. Seriously, no problem, I’m happy to do it. Republicans and Fox News (or do I repeat myself?) are in a bit of a tizzy over how to handle upcoming presidential debates for GOP candidates. Neglected 1960s finally get some attention

Most of the television I watch is at the Y, from an elliptical machine, with no sound on the TV, just close captioning. I know that doesn’t qualify me as a television critic, but I saw two things yesterday that cried out for comment. One was that CNN was advertising a new 10-part documentary series on the 1960s. A Fox News contributor last week asked protesters at a North Carolina rally whether the Tea Party is racist. Sure it is, they said. Could they give examples? Not so much. A graduate student at UCLA analyzed signs at a Tea Party rally in Washington, D.C. She found that only about 6 percent mentioned President Obama’s race, religion or American citizenship.
