Montana Mint, statewide readers pick top athletes

Rushmore

Over at Montana Mint, the results are in. As we reported recently, the popular all-things-Montana blog asked the public to help find the four greatest athletes in Montana history—the Mount Rushmore of Montana sports. With more than 2,500 votes cast, the four are Dave Dickenson, Larry Krystkowiak, Dave McNally and Evel Knievel. As the Montana Mint noted, “The winners all represent different sports and different hometowns: Dickenson (Football/Great Falls), Krystkowiak (Basketball/Missoula), McNally (Baseball/Billings), and Evel Knievel (Stunts/Butte).” So now we know that “stunts” is officially a sport. At the Pekin Noodle Parlor in Butte, history’s on the menu

Booth

BUTTE—On a visit to Butte early last fall, I heard two things over and over again. One was that Danny Wong’s hot mustard at the Pekin Noodle Parlor would clear your sinuses. The other was that the Chinese in early-day Butte had built tunnels under much of the Uptown and used them for a variety of nefarious purposes, including drug-running and kidnapping. Christmas 1967: Delivering potatoes to strikebound Butte

Hall

BUTTE, America, 1967—In nearly a century of existence, the Mining City was no stranger to labor strife, and when Christmas came in 1967, Butte was living through its longest-ever strike. Underground miners there and smeltermen from Anaconda had been off the job since mid-July and would stay out until the following April. As a show of support, members of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union at what then was the Farmers Union Central Exchange refinery south of Laurel put together a pre-Christmas caravan for their Butte brethren. A man in full: Documentary takes a close look at Knievel

“Being Evel,” a new documentary about Butte’s most infamous son, works hard to capture Evel Knievel as he really was—a monumental daredevil and self-promoter who could also be a selfish jerk. The film presents abundant evidence for his having been a jerk. There’s talk about his pursuit of lowlife crime as a young man, and footage of a surly Knievel cursing at the press corps before his big jump over the Snake River Canyon. (more…) Continue Reading →

Evel who? Meet Montana’s unsung motorcycle hero

Honda

If there were any justice in this world, Gregory Frazier would be as famous as that other Montana motorcyclist, the late Robert Knievel. Frazier, who lives in Fort Smith when he’s not on his motorcycle, is not a daredevil in the traditional sense of the term, meaning he doesn’t jump over cars, buses or gorges. But it takes a different kind of guts, and incredible doggedness, to do what Frazier has done on a motorcycle. (more…) Continue Reading →

Colorado filmmaker planning Knievel documentary

As the ugly, confusing squabble over Evel Knievel Days continues in Butte, a Colorado filmmaker’s plans for making a documentary about Knievel are moving forward. Daniel Junge, the director of what will be called “Being Evel,” was awarded more than $94,000 in state incentives by the Colorado Economic Development Commission. (more…) Continue Reading →
