In annoucing the proposed expansion of the Art House Cinema & Pub during an event at the downtown business Monday night, Matt Blakeslee told about going to see “The Artist” back in 2011. The black-and-white silent movie, which would go on to win seven Oscars, including Best Film, had won high praise from critics and movie-goers for many months before Carmike Cinemas, which then owned every screen in town, finally brought the movie to Billings. After a successful first year as an independent movie theater in downtown Billings, Art House Cinema & Pub has launched a membership drive. Selling memberships was always part of the plan for the nonprofit theater, which raised startup funding through an Indiegogo campaign and other donations, but founder Matt Blakeslee figured waiting a year was a good idea. A select group of friends and financial supporters got a sneak preview of the Art House Cinema & Pub in downtown Billings Friday night. Treated to beer, wine and snacks, 35 or 40 people settled into theater seats and watched a selection of Academy Award-nominated animated shorts, then heard an update and a profusion of thanks from Matt Blakeslee, CEO of the nonprofit venture. A week from Saturday, Billings Depot Inc. is throwing a black-tie Taste of Billings celebration that depot director Jennifer Mercer hopes will be “the most elegant, luxurious event Billings has ever seen.”
That’s quite a claim, and it’s all the more remarkable considering that the setting, the old Northern Pacific Railway Depot on Montana Avenue, was in wretched condition just 20 years ago, and had nearly been demolished 25 years ago. (more…) Continue Reading →
