At this school, students learn rudiments of rock ‘n’ roll

Earlier this week, at a group lesson for students in the Free Spirit Rock School, Sharon Mulvehill was sitting in on bass guitar. She normally plays a regular guitar, and she wasn’t all that familiar with the bass line for the first song of the night, Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” Bill Dickman, the school’s guitar teacher and musical director, who happened to be sitting in on drums, stopped the song and briefly, a little impatiently, told Mulvehill what she should be playing. SCRAP Billings opens reuse store on South 29th Street

A “creative reuse” store just south of the tracks in downtown Billings is open for business. The opening comes a bit later than expected, but also unexpected was the flood of donations and offers of help. “It has been so well received,” said Tammy Zemliska, director of the SCRAP Billings store at 21 S. 29th St. “People have been so excited once they realize their stuff doesn’t have to end up in the landfill.” (more…) Continue Reading →

‘Creative reuse’ store hopes to promote art, conservation

Last winter, Tammy Zemliska and Doreen Hartman met when both were selling repurposed jewelry and home furnishings at Kim & Eddy’s on Montana Avenue. In talking with other artists who were also into repurposing and upcycling, as it’s called, they saw that there was a big need for work and studio space in Billings.
