It’s high time someone took a stand in support of U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont. I volunteer.
I have been critical of the good senator a few dozen times. But when the man’s right, he’s right. Kind of. Sort of. Continue Reading →
Last Best News (https://montana-mint.com/lastbestnews/page/56/)
I was planning to ride off into the sunset today, but if I may appropriate an observation by Benjamin Franklin, it looks as though I might be heading in the direction of the rising sun.
In the week since I announced that Last Best News would cease publication today, I have heard so many expressions of interest in reviving it in some shape or form, with or without my continued involvement, that it appears likely that this independent online newspaper will live on.

As members of the American Indian Caucus of the Montana Legislature, we extend our condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, who lost her life protesting hate and bigotry in Charlottesville, Va.
Our hearts also go out to the families of Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke M.M. Bates of the Virginia State Police, who lost their lives while monitoring the rally. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlottesville and those across this great country who have been hurt physically and emotionally by the despicable actions exhibited by white nationalists. Those were dangerous places with the sluggish but heavy pull of water in the ditches and the swirling water that could tug a swimmer from a river’s edge to the rapids. Continue Reading →
In response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday, about 60 people gathered on the lawn of the Yellowstone County Courthouse on Sunday to call for peace, justice and inclusion.
“Virginia?” Penny Ronning asked. “Charlottesville? That could be Billings. Charlottesville is not unique.” Continue Reading →
Last month, I had occasion to criticize Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton, who seemed to be determined to cast doubt on the validity of our election processes.
I thought it was a strange goal, given that the secretary of state is the chief elections officer for Montana. I wondered, was it something like having Scott Pruitt lead the Environmental Protection Agency, which he seems bent on dismantling? Continue Reading →
Everyone sees headlines in the newspaper about abuse. People often ask, why didn’t the victim just leave? Why didn’t they tell anyone?
It’s understandable to feel that way when you might not know about the dynamics of abuse. I’d like to help shed light on some of those dynamics. Continue Reading →
