BRIDGER — A patio table in Shirley Smith’s backyard is covered with soot-blackened artifacts, including a set of antique handcuffs, an old fig syrup bottle and a partially melted saddle bronc trophy from a rodeo in Malta. Smith has been trying to restore them, using a variety of cleansers and scrub brushes. “It takes time and a lot of figuring out how to do it,” she says. (more…) Continue Reading →

Adolph’s obsession: The story of the Bible in stone
|
Part of the charm of the Pathway Thru the Bible, one of the oddest roadside attractions in Montana, is that it is so rarely visited. That doesn’t prevent me from wanting to spread the word, to encourage other people to go there. (more…) Continue Reading →

I suppose I should explain why I decided to take photographs of panhandlers. But first let me explain what the collection of photos is not. It is not, for starters, an attempt to weigh in on the whole question of whether you should give money to panhandlers. (more…) Continue Reading →

A friend of mine who used to go to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival every year told me that on the drive back to Montana, after four or five solid days of music, he couldn’t even listen to the radio. He was filled to the gills, exhausted, all the listening space between his ears depleted. (more…) Continue Reading →

INGOMAR — In the long dance hall attached to the Jersey Lilly bar and cafe, people who weren’t dancing Sunday afternoon were generally watching the musicians — or the feet of people who were dancing. (more…) Continue Reading →
