Opinion: ‘War on coal’? How about ‘Give peace a chance’

Wade

U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., came to Baker, where I live, to talk about, as he put it, a “war on coal.” His visit was part of an energy tour leading up to an Energy Expo in Billings, which he organized on behalf of the fossil fuel industries. As the days have passed, and I have thought about what was implicit in what he said, I find myself increasingly disturbed by how he and other politicians, like Ryan Zinke, Tim Fox, Greg Gianforte and Donald Trump are framing environmentalists. Opinion: Why the renewable-energy initiative makes sense

Judith

Brad Molnar ended The Billings Outpost’s run with an op-ed that demeaned ballot Initiative 180. We were exasperated by how little he faced facts. I-180 would require Montana’s Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) to gradually supply 80 percent of their power from “eligible renewable resources.” That includes wind, sun, geothermal or post-2005 additions to hydroelectric facilities. David Crisp: ‘Truth’ reminds us of Vietnam’s lost lessons

Truth

Nobody knows for sure who will be the Democratic and Republican candidates for U.S. president in November, but we know one thing for sure: Neither will be a military veteran. The last time that happened was in 2012. Before that, you have to go back to World War II to find a presidential election without a veteran in the race. (more…) Continue Reading →

Corette

The former Corette power plant has been torn down, and the land on which it stood is bounded on the north by the interstate highway, and adjoins the Yellowstone River across from Sacrifice Cliff. How wonderful it would be if this land, or at least a significant portion of it, were available for public use? (more…) Continue Reading →

David Crisp: On medical pot, legislative ‘fix’ was a disaster

Crisp

I’ve probably told this story too many times, but I can’t discuss medical marijuana without bringing it up: On a vacation in Minnesota, many years ago, long before the statute of limitations ran out, I suffered a severe roadside attack of diarrhea. I need not, and probably should not, describe how awful that was. (more…) Continue Reading →

Montana Viewpoint: An easy way to start restoring civility

Elliott

American voters are angry at politicians, and is it any wonder? The voters are divisible into at least two groups; those who are angry that Congress can’t get anything done, and those who are angry because they have been cheated by politicians who couldn’t deliver on their promises. (more…) Continue Reading →

David Crisp: Baseball’s risks harder and harder to ignore

DC

Imagine a sport in which part of the evening’s entertainment is, a couple of dozen times a game, to randomly fire hard objects traveling 100 mph at the fans in the stands. Imagine that an average of two fans get hurt every three games, even when the game is played at the highest level. (more…) Continue Reading →
