As sabers rattle over the Korean peninsula, remember that those who create wars seldom fight in them. That is left to the sons and daughters of less important people. The decisions to enter what became known as World War I were made by men who believed it would be close to Armageddon. “If war breaks out,” said British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey, “it will be the worst catastrophe the world has ever seen.” (more…) Continue Reading →

In Vienna, my adopted city, there is a Soviet War Memorial. It occupies 3,000 square feet in central Vienna. It features a white marble colonnade and a 650-foot column capped by a 40-foot figure of a Red Army soldier. He is wearing a golden helmet and bears a Soviet flag and a golden Soviet coat of arms. A plaque at the base of the column reads: “Monument to honor the soldiers of the Soviet Army who fell while freeing Austria from Fascism.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Hold on; Daines has this one right

It’s high time someone took a stand in support of U.S. Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont. I volunteer. I have been critical of the good senator a few dozen times. But when the man’s right, he’s right. Kind of. Continue Reading →

Opinion: Time to rid Helena of Confederate memorial

As members of the American Indian Caucus of the Montana Legislature, we extend our condolences to the family of Heather Heyer, who lost her life protesting hate and bigotry in Charlottesville, Va. Our hearts also go out to the families of Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper Berke M.M. Bates of the Virginia State Police, who lost their lives while monitoring the rally. Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlottesville and those across this great country who have been hurt physically and emotionally by the despicable actions exhibited by white nationalists. Opinion: In the aftermath of violence, silence from ‘leaders’

A presidential response condemning white nationalists and Neo-Nazis should not be this difficult to formulate, and the silence from Montana’s state and congressional leaders should not be this deep and profound. On Saturday, white supremacists marched down the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia, waving Confederate flags and bearing Nazi symbols, where they were confronted by counter protesters understandably offended by the outward show of bigotry and hate. (more…) Continue Reading →

Opinion: Here’s how abusers silence their victims
|
Everyone sees headlines in the newspaper about abuse. People often ask, why didn’t the victim just leave? Why didn’t they tell anyone? It’s understandable to feel that way when you might not know about the dynamics of abuse. I’d like to help shed light on some of those dynamics. Continue Reading →

Montana Viewpoint: Ideology versus reality

The struggle in American government today is one between hypothetical ideology and stark reality. The ideology lives in our national and state capitols and the reality is borne by the Americans our governments are supposed to serve. (more…) Continue Reading →

Great Falls site joins independent online news team
|
Montana Today added a third contributing news source to its team on Monday when we welcomed Jenn Rowell of The Electric in Great Falls to our daily e-news publication. Rowell, a former reporter with the Great Falls Tribune, was laid off by Gannet—the paper’s owner—last October. As I did after leaving the Missoulian, she would spend her nights, perhaps sleeplessly, considering her next move, which led her to launch The Electric. (more…) Continue Reading →
