Circus, sound bites, cliches: A night at the great debate

Debate

Amanda Curtis does not think the United States can be “the policeman of the world.” Nor does she believe that Congress should “kick the can down the road.”

Steve Daines said his policies are good “not only for this generation but our children and our grandchildren.” He also said “we need to have both sides coming to the table and coming to an agreement.” (more…) Continue Reading →

In memoriam: Misty Upham

Upham

News item: A body believed to be that of missing actress Misty Upham has been found in the Seattle area, police said on Thursday. I first interviewed Misty Upham a few months ago, and it ended eerily. Out of the more than 1,000 interviews I’ve conducted, our three conversations, each lasting about an hour, were uniquely unshakeable. (more…) Continue Reading →

Citizens appeal for transparency on gas flaring, oil spills

Oil board

Two members of the Northern Plains Resource Council appealed to the Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation on Wednesday to make information on oil spills and gas flaring more readily accessible to the public. “We thought perhaps you could take a look at what North Dakota does,” Deborah Hanson told the board during one of its regular meetings in Billings. From the Outpost: An opening for long-shot Lewis

I just about dropped what’s left of my teeth when I saw on Sunday that the Billings Gazette had endorsed John Lewis for the U.S. House over Ryan Zinke. Zinke seemed to be the natural pick in this race: tons of experience, some of it relevant; an unflappable public presence; a history of edging toward moderation. Even the Butte Weekly, a Democratic-leaning newspaper in a Democratic-leaning town, has endorsed Zinke, a Republican. (more…) Continue Reading →

Hardin jail—at long last—is open, slowly expanding

Jail

HARDIN — Seven years after it was built, the Hardin jail is finally up and running, with a slowly expanding roster of inmates. Warden Kenneth Keller said the head count was 56 on Friday, all of them prisoners committed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs or from individual Indian tribes in Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming. House debate unlikely to have swayed many voters

If the purpose of a political debate is to change voters’ minds, then Monday’s U.S. House debate at Montana State University Billings was a clear draw. It’s hard to imagine that any minds changed after a debate in which Republican Ryan Zinke and Democrat John Lewis seemed to agree at least at often as they disagreed. (more…) Continue Reading →

Yellowstone hosts first-ever citizenship ceremony

Dolbear

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WYO. — Yellowstone National Park often plays host to a range of special occasions like marriage proposals, birthdays, family reunions and even the scattering of cremated remains. But until now, the park had never been the site for a naturalization ceremony. (more…) Continue Reading →

Biggest house in county coming along quickly

Big House

Work on what is thought to be the largest house ever built in Yellowstone County is proceeding quickly. Much of the framing on the 26,000-square-foot house appears to be done already. The house is being built just to the northeast of the developed portion of the Ironwood Subdivision, which itself is just east of the railroad overpass on Molt Road. (more…) Continue Reading →

Mystery of tombstone found in river is quickly solved

Headstone

This story has been updated, in a postscript. The power of social media was on display in Billings Monday, when users of a Facebook page quickly solved the mystery surrounding a tombstone found in the Yellowstone River. The granite headstone was found Saturday during the eighth annual Yellowstone River Cleanup. A group of Rocky Mountain College students found the headstone near Duck Creek Bridge, on dry cobblestone near the water’s edge, and hauled it by boat to Norm’s Island, a few miles downstream. (more…) Continue Reading →
