20-year-old convicted of rape is granted new trial

A 20-year-old man who spent nearly 19 months in Yellowstone County jail was awarded a new trial on Thursday, and the case against him could be dismissed. Casey Don Ehrlick was convicted of rape in October after being held in jail for nearly a year. He remained in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility until about a week ago, when evidence surfaced that his alleged victim may have lied about his guilt. (more…) Continue Reading →

Surgeon offers inside look at shoulder operation

In an age of omnipresent technology, Americans are getting used to the idea that everything around them is going to be recorded on video. Now a Billings doctor is expanding that to include what’s inside them. Thomas Owen at the Yellowstone Surgery Center says he is the first surgeon in the region to begin distributing internal videos and photos, accompanied by narrative, to patients undergoing surgery done with the aid of a scope, such as joint and rotator cuff injuries. Billings churches prepare ‘welcome kits’ for refugees

In January, between semesters at Montana State University Billings, sophomore Carter Knight spent two weeks in Memphis, helping the World Relief organization in its efforts to resettle foreign refugees. This summer, the Billings native will spend three months in Africa, part of the time in the slums of Kampala, Uganda, helping people with disabilities and then working with refugees in several other countries. Athlete’s privacy rights debated in Krakauer’s high court hearing

The Montana Supreme Court on Wednesday heard oral arguments in a case that pits the public’s right to know against a student’s right to privacy, and whether a lower court erred in granting author Jon Krakauer access to the student’s disciplinary records. Krakauer is seeking records pertaining to the 2012 disciplinary proceedings of Jordan Johnson, the former starting quarterback for the University of Montana football team. The proceedings found Johnson guilty of rape and ordered him expelled from school. Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian overturned the decision, however, and Johnson was never expelled. Minutes of closed session released by Red Lodge mayor

The minutes of a closed meeting of the Red Lodge City Council in March show that it was Mayor Ed Williams’ idea to seek the resignation of Police Chief Steve Hibler.
