GMD Development of Seattle is partnering with Homeword, a Missoula-based nonprofit, to develop a 136-unit affordable senior rental community, known as Heights Senior, in Billings next year. The Billings Chamber of Commerce handed out six A’s and only one F in its evaluation of the 21 candidates running for six seats on the Billings City Council. The ratings also included five B’s, eight C’s and a lone D. Candidates were rated mostly on how they responded to a Chamber questionnaire, with some weight given to past experiences and “demonstrable community leadership.” The F went to Ward 2 candidate Frank Ewalt, who did not respond to the questionnaire. During a firefighting operation in north-central Montana last month, helicopter crews hit the wildfire with water scooped from manmade ponds on the site of the abandoned Zortman-Landusky Mines. Last Best News contacted the Department of Environmental Quality after hearing rumors that the helicopters mistakenly used water from the ponds, and that the supposedly toxic water had damaged land in the path of the fire. Billings lawyer John Heenan has announced that he will seek the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte, R-Mont., in the 2018 election. Heenan, 40, is the first Democrat to file as a candidate for Montana’s only House seat. Heenan, who registered his campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission on Saturday, said he began thinking of running against Gianforte “after the special election and Gianforte’s assault on the reporter.” (more…) Continue Reading →

Thirty years after the community saved the old Fox Theater in downtown Billings, Larry Martin is convinced the community will rally again behind a dramatic overhaul of the Alberta Bair Theater, successor to the Fox. “At this point, it’s impossible to imagine downtown Billings without the Alberta Bair Theater, and I think the bulk of the community sees it that way,” Martin said. Users of South Park in Billings have been waiting a long time for their new “splash pad,” also known as a sprayground, where kids can cool off among a variety of fountains, jets and other water features. First, construction was delayed for an entire year after the two companies that initially bid on the project had their bids rejected because of problems both had in posting a performance bond.
